Sublime Beauty

A little gem of 19th century taste in the middle of a busy intersection. Quiet and gleaming white aisles allow you to imagine what it was like here 150 years ago.

I love old churches and this one was a wonderful break filled with peace and rest from the busy streets and all the walking we had been doing in among the surrounding neighborhoods. I loved the stain glass and the stories that the art work told.

Please take a break and enjoy a moment of peace in this cathedral, when they are not having service. Appreciate the architecture and I like to peacefulness that comes with it.

Loving the story of Saint Francis of Assisi and what he stood for, made this visit even more memorable. One of the greatest experiences is to visit the replica of the chapel which is next door. I spoke to one of the Franciscan Monks for over half an hour. Truly an experience I will not forget. The gift shop is... More

A beautiful building, which provides sanctuary from the city outside. Worth visiting if you are in this area.

You really need to take the time to walk through the church . It is so beautiful. I love the paintings on the ceilings. You will be awe struck when you look down the pews to the front. Words can not describe the beauty and peace.

Stop in - to see this grand church. No longer a parish and supported only through donations. Feels spiritual and will touch your heart.

I had the great joy of visiting the National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi and discovering the beautiful replica of St. Francis' Chapel in Assisi. This treasure is a place of prayer and recollection, but also a visual splendor of Frescoes, tile work, stonework and atmosphere so like Italy, you would think you were transported. The attendants to the... More

It was on a food walking tour that we were shown the National Shrine of Saint Francis of Assisi. We were privileged to be welcomed by a church greeter and invited to tour the shrine and enjoy. La Nuova Porziuncola is a scaled replica of Saint Francis's Porziuncola in Assisi, Italy, and we were delighted to say that it brought... More

While the church itself is closed for renovations, the 75% scale model of St Francis' church in Assisi is holy and wonderful. A nice place to light a candle and offer a prayer before the blessed sacrament. Daily mass at 12:30, Sunday at 11. Free, but seek donations for upkeep of the national shrine. Cool gift shop right around the... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
