About
Heart of the City Farmers Market is a uniquely independent, farmer-operated, nonprofit farmers market located year round on Sundays and Wednesdays in San Francisco's United Nations Plaza. An iconic and beloved community resource, the market opened in 1981 with a mission to support and sustain small farmers and make fresh food accessible for low-income customers who struggle to afford adequate nutrition in a city with the highest cost of living in the nation. We distribute over $1.5 million annually in food assistance at our information tent, provide education programs for people facing the nutritional challenges of poverty, manage distribution and redemption for the largest farmers market EBT program in California, and make over $500,000 per year in grant-funded incentives available to help low-income families purchase fruits and vegetables from local farms.

Neighbourhood: Civic Center
Civic Center is the seat of power for all things government and performance-related in the city. Although its streets are best walked during daytime, numerous cultural gems are within close proximity to one another. The symphony, opera, ballet, and jazz center offer year round entertainment within the shadow of the city’s Beaux-Arts crown jewel: the gold tipped dome of City Hall.

This is a great resource for the neighborhood as the fruit and vegies are fresh and there is a good selection, including some odd choices. The merchants are friendly. Office workers come here as well. Too bad the surroundings are so bleak.

It's a wonderful community resource, a place to buy good food in a neighborhood that lacks good grocery stores. Prices are low, everything is fresh. And it's out in the open air. Unfortunately the market competes with the decline of the neighborhood.

This farmers market is a shopping paradise. There is a selections of fruits, vegetables, fish and bread.

The quality is exceptional and the prices are superb. You can fill the bag with however much you would like and it will be weighed accordingly.

I really enjoyed this one in comparison to the Ferry plaza market.

There are other Farmer's Markets in the city, such as at the Ferry Building, but I feel you get the better price at this one. If you go closer to closing time, you can get even bigger bargains. A wide variety of fruits, veggies and nuts. Many vendors have samples which is nice. If you're a foreigner or not a local, some of the people you pass to get into the market might give you a bit of a startle, but I have never had a "horrible" experience.

Friendly and festive are the flavors that best describe this open air grocery store in the theatre district of San Francisco. Whether you're looking for fresh picked asparagus, pink oyster mushrooms, or strawberries, this is the place to create a scrumptious meal.

Shoppers Tip: Take time to sit and enjoy street musicians sipping a latte with beans from Ecuador.

The Farmers Market is a nice place to visit, but the homeless lying around on the venture to and from the market ruin the experience. The City needs to clean up their issue of homeless lying around, rummaging through garbage and pan handling.

The market is located in the UN Plaza, very close to the City Hall. It is quite small and did not impress me particularly (I may have seen too many markets), but the products looked of good quality and at reasonable prices.

The live, organic produce is simply outstanding and tasty. Check out Francesca's Fresh Produce where you'll find the best organic, unpasteurized, natural almonds. They are extraordinary delicious! Overall, the farmers market offers the "good stuff" from earth.

If you read my advisories you know I love watching locals. If that is your shtick too – this is your thing! Wednesday lunch 11-3 at Civic Center… easy MUNI or BART stop and it is right there. The local’s area from all walks of life and mingling freely, everyone on their best behavior. The lunch trucks are astounding. Actually, everything I tried from all the venders was excellent. When they say you can’t go wrong in San Francisco with the food, this street-market is included.
