Fish stories

Walk-in. Had a wonderful chat with two of the staff. Showed us how they tag fish and projects they are working on. They helped us understand the needs they meet in restocking native fish. Enjoyed their passion. We were lucky since tours need advance notice.

Disappointing – Not Much To See
Jul 2018 • Couples
The Les Voight State Fish Hatchery Visitor Center is a fish hatchery and is run by the Wisconsin DNR. This hatchery is open 7 days a week from April – October from 8 AM – 4 PM. This hatchery raises lake trout, splake and brown trout for stocking Wisconsin lakes and Lake Superior. The exterior of the building looks like an old barn and has the year 1897 written across the top. This attraction is located about 3 miles south of downtown Bayfield on Highway 13.

I visited this attraction with my wife on a Sunday morning in late July and was disappointed in it. We arrived at 8:00 AM and the parking lot was completely empty and I thought it was closed. The front door was actually open so we walked in and checked it out. We did not see anyone (except for some fish tank cleaners at the back of the building) and actually did not even see any fish. We could see fish tanks but that was about it. I stopped here hoping to see 1000’s of fish and I didn’t even see one. I wonder if part of the hatchery was closed as other reviews wrote about seeing lots of fish.

Overall I was disappointed in The Les Voight State Fish Hatchery Visitor Center as there was not much to see. I do not recommend this place as a tourist attraction and will not be going back on my next visit to Bayfield. Thank goodness there was no admission fee as that would have made it worse.

It's hard to deny the calming effect of watching fish
Oct 2017 • Solo
I wandered in, in need of a restroom, but I stayed to look in the giant fish tanks. It's not a big place, and it was deserted, so I took advantage of trying to figure out which kind of fish I was looking at. Appreciated the information on splake, which I'd never heard of, and just being able to watch fish do their thing.

Road trip! We visited this attraction hoping to see some fish, other than those in an aquarium in the lobby. None of the outside races where the immature fish were located were accessible by visitors. Good exhibits and a few fish in the lobby aquarium, including a couple of albino fish, but not sure it is worth your time.

We were in town for 3 days and we drove by twice trying to get a visit. No one was ever there! We like to travel and visit fish hatcheries and were saddened to not be able to add this one to the list.

Interesting, free, but still a bit disappointed

Drove from Cornucopia to visit. Clean inside area and liked the written materials and the fish tank. The rest of the inside area of the visitors center was dark, could only see the outline of the tanks and the egg area (by the bathrooms), nothing to see. Outside holding areas were murky with 'yard debris' floating. Could only make out a few fish swimming. There were 4-5 families of Canada geese with goslings to look at. Not worth walking around the little trail if you're looking for fish, different sizes, species etc. A bit of a disappointment.

Informative - but a little disapointed

The information in the visitors area is great! We certainly learned alot and were impressed with what the State of Wisconsin has done for the stocking of fish. We were a little disappointed in that we would have like to see more of the fish but do understand the reasoning.

Nice Free Visit

This was just up the road so we had to stop. It was a neat little place with a lot of great history in fisheries and fish in Wisconsin.

Be sure to go out behind the building to the viewing ponds where you have the chance to see their pet fish! If you spot a worker ask if they can feed the fish out back. It is super fund watching all the fish storm the waters for food!

After enjoying a walk on the trail outside the hatchery, we visited
with a young man who worked there and was very helpful and informative. He gave us our own private tour of the hatchery. He was very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. Definitely a place worth visiting!

Wonderful Hatchery...Great FREE Aquarium...COOL place!
Aug 2016 • Couples
We really enjoyed getting out of the August heat when we visited this large barn-like AIR CONDITIONED handicapped accessible facility...it was a bit of a walk for handicapped people up the inclined walkway from the parking area....but we're glad we made it. You will be too...

Entering the very clean and well organized FREE exhibit area, we could observe the indoor hatching, fingerling, and grow-out tanks from a visitor's viewing gallery (It is indoors to keep the local wildlife from attacking the fish and eating them for dinner). Several species are produced here in the 10s of thousands each year...eggs are fertilized and the fingerlings are raised to stocking size for the whole State.

A large glass wall 20,000 gallon community tank greets the Hatchery visitor, so you can look at all the full grown fish species nose to nose....but please don't tap on the glass. These are the fish that have made the area such a "Great Lakes Fishing Capital" for thousands of years...fortunately thanks to the hard-working staff, the fish populations of the Great Lakes is coming back, and many of them fish got a start right here at the Les Voight State Fish Hatchery.

Children love this place, and you will too .... especially to enjoy the cool temperatures and the big aquarium! And it is FREE!
