Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We took this drive on a beautiful fall morning and loved the views. It took us about two hours of unhurried driving with very little traffic. It was a bit hazy from the wildfire smoke in the area but the views were still wonderful. We drove it counterclockwise from Moab, which I recommend for the views as you descend on the north side down to the Colorado River.

We have done this drive many times, usually in the summer as a way to get out of the heat. This year we drove it in March, and there was still a lot of snow on the ground. We usually start at Ken's Lake and end up at the Colorado River. The view descending into Castle Valley is incredible.

The La Sal Mountains are by no means a large, tall or great mountain range. However, we they are, is an amazing backdrop to all the sights in Moab. Nearly everything you see from Arches and Canyonlands NPs to the town of Moab, the La Sal Mountains loom over and provide an awesome view. While they appear green in the summer photos, we visited in the Spring when they are capped with snow which gives them their name, La Sal - the salt. The look like a beer commercial when you get to see them.

This was a fabulous way to spend the afternoon and beat the heat down in Moab. We started south of Moab - don't worry if the first section of road is a little rutted and worn, it gets better. We gained about 4000' of elevation to the top, and stopped at the lookout for some lunch and to enjoy the views. My mother in law was disappointed because she'd been told there would be forests, and technically there were, in the form of pinion pines, junipers, and the occasional stand of aspen(?) birch(?). But we're from Washington, where forest means towering pine trees and tons of shade. But there is plenty to enjoy, including the wonderful views and twisty hairpin turns. Drops you out by the Colorado River and you wind along next to it back into town.
We drove our pickup, but this would be a great road for motorcycle touring. We also met some people on bicycles at the top, which is a whole other level of insanity! Fun fact - the La Sal Mountains apparently have a robust population of black bears. But all we saw were cows.

When my husband told me he wanted to see the mountain up close, I thought it was kind of silly. I'm glad he did because the drive alone did not disappoint. If I had known, I would have rented snowshoes at the local outfitter and tried walking on the several trails marked along the way. At the beginning of the loop there is a trail called Grandstaff Canyon Trail which I plan on doing the next time we come out here. Gorgeous vistas. Relaxing drive.

From the distance, driving into Moab we assumed the white tips on the mountains was snow. It’s actually dirt! Spent the middle of afternoon driving through, it’s not Rocky Mountain beautiful, but the views are magnificent in their own right. There’s a spot on the top with a great view and a bathroom. Ran into a couple of the free ranging angus cows. All in all, it’s worth the drive through, the drive back along the River is magnificent (we started in Moab).

The La Sal Mountain Loop takes you up and over the La Sal Mountains. From various points of the loop you will have incredible views of the surrounding valleys. Be a little careful of the weather as snow comes early.

We started off as a discovery adventure on SR128 off of 191, and were not disappointed! The ride along the Colorado River, with several stops to sightsee, then the ride up, up the mountain all the way to ver 8300 feet through Castle valley were truly a joyous experience. gorgeous scenery, a bit reminiscent of my switzerland with cows grazing along the roads and some log cabins/chalets on the way back down... loved it.

Second time to do this loop. Great way to get out of the valley heat, but today Sep9, had a freak cold front the day before & temps were cold. 55 in Moab, 37 at the pass elevation. Light snow in the upper level trees! Lots of twists & turns, switchbacks & breathtaking views. Plan a minimum of 1 hour from Spanish Valley to Castle Valley. New pavement on the Castle Valley side. Patched pavement on the Spanish Valley side.

This was a nice little cruise to get off the beaten path but I wouldn’t say it was unforgettable or unmissable. Luckily we had time while in Moab to get to see almost everything that we had on our list. This was on the list but we saved it for the last day in case other stuff came along. I’m glad we took the time to drive out there but wouldn’t go back again. If you have a limited amount of time, hit the other stuff first but keep this adventure in your back pocket just in case.

Which direction do you recommend driving the loop for the best views? Starting south of Moab, or starting north?
Written 15 September 2020
Coming from the south and heading north was a very nice scenic drive. At the end you follow the scenic river drive back in to Moab.

Hello, how long is the hike from Warner Lake campground to Golden Nob? And how does one get to the trailhead?
Thanks!

Hi. Sorry can't tell you, as we only drive thru. Mapmaterial isn't too good. We even got lost due to various roads not marked on map. And we always orient ourselves by map and don't rely on GPS.
Maybe best to check with Moab "Touristinfo".
Make sure you fill up on gas before leaving 😊.

Hi, genehayes. What would you like to know about this attraction?

I am a little confused about the closure. Obviously during the construction, this is not a loop. I guess it is in an and back out the same way, Where is the best place to enter to get the most out of the available scenic drive?
Written 6 May 2017
A niece leisurely drive you can do it in and hour or two, interesting narrow roads, nice scenery, switchback and elevation gain.

How long of a drive is the La Sal Loop, if we want a nice casual sight seeing drive?
Written 15 April 2017
I agree, a couple of hours should suffice for the drive, but we took our time exploring some of the lakes and camp sites, so took a bit longer. We drove through Castle Valley on the way back to Moab which is very picturesque. You should check out the movie museum and do some wine tasting at the Red Cliffs Lodge. Or combine with some awesome hiking at Fisher Towers.

I am experienced driving RVs on all types of roads and would like to know if there any restrictions on the route for a 30 foot motorhome (ie turn restrictions, heith/weight restrictions). Thank you .
Written 13 August 2016
There are no tunnels but part of the road is narrow with many hairpin turns, steep inclines and desents, and cattle on the road. We left our travel trailer at the park and went on this drive in our Dodge Ram.
