Bandelier National Monument is 50 square miles of the Pajarito Plateau, on the slopes of the Jemez Volcanic field in the Jemez Mountains. Over 70% of the Monument is Wilderness, with over 1 mile elevation change, from about 5000' along the Rio Grande to over 10,000' at the rim of the Valles Caldera, providing for a wide range of life zones and wildlife habitat. There are only 3 miles of road, but over 70 miles of hiking trails. The Monument, founded in 1916, protects Ancestral Pueblo archeological sites, a beautiful landscape, and the country's largest Civilian Conservation Corps National Landmark District.

It took about an hour or so and we stopped to read the descriptions of all the trail markers. An easy hike with the option of exploring caves and petroglyphs from native peoples. There's even some nice wildlife to spot - check out the long bushy wears on the squirrels!

Great place for an easy to moderate hike (depending on whether you climb all the ladders). Super fun with pre-teens, but truly something for all ages.

This was the forth time I've been able to enjoy this awesome special location. As long as you are in Okay.good/shape the walk is easy taken slower especially if you are a flat-lander. The valley was healing from the flood a couple of years back.

Bandelier National Monument is a treasure and I am so thankful for those who had the foresight to take the steps necessary to preserve this great place. We have made a few trips to Bandelier over the years and never tire of it. It is truly special. This trip we decided to take a hike near the Monument and did... More

Bandelier is phenomenal! I wasn't sure what to expect, even having read lots of reviews, but it was beautiful! Easy enough hiking is certainly possible, but climbing the steps to see virtually everything is well worth it! I'm not much for climbing down, but I am glad I didn't chicken out. Go for it!

This was our first trip to New Mexico. My wife and I wanted to go someplace we'd never been before - and boy does she like turquoise jewelry - so off to Santa Fe. I like to hike, so she researched and found nearby Bandolier. What a treat! Great history of the indigenous tribes, and amazing scenery. Climbing the ladders... More

This park is small in nature being 33,750 acres with limited road access, ( 3 miles of blacktop roads) but has 70 miles of trails where you find the Pueblo people ancient life become real to you. The cliff dwellings, sunken dwellings in the group bring you to feel how the Pueblo people existed. Hikers can get to see in... More

I've said in most of my National Park reviews that I am visiting as many national parks, monuments, wildlife refuges, etc. as I can. Bandelier is incredible! The drive to it is absolutely magnificent and filled with beautiful scenery and incredible sights Stop at some of the overlooks and you'll be surprised how beautiful the vistas they offer are! The... We took the scenic route to get here which was an extra hour but so beautiful. They have many hikes available but the main loop is about a mile. Here you get to climb ladders into the caves they've built and see what's left of a culture. We decided to add onto the alcove house which was an extra mile... More
