I was fortunate to have been able to visit Fort Independence on July 4th (Independence Day) when the US Navy sails OLD IRONSIDES there for her annual turnaround cruise and fires her canon. Even on days other than Independence Day it is a great scenic picnic area and you can usually tour the fort during daylight hours. Be sure to... More

My 9 year old insisted on Castle Island as it is part of the popular game Fallout, and I'm glad I caved to his persistance. This place was the close out of our 4 day weekend and a peaceful ending at that! We missed the tour as they are only available on Saturday/Sundays, but the grounds were still an enjoyable... More

Boston is great because of all the public outdoor space throughout the city. Castle Island is one of such options. The site is historic, serene and totally open. It is ideal for a picnic (but bring your own food) or a jog around the fort and breakwater. Strolling from the entrance around the fort and the breakwater would take roughly... More

Castle Island is a family favorite for walking around, skipping rocks on the water, jogging, hanging out on the okay beach, eating burgers/dogs/fries/onion rings/ice cream! It's also fun to watch the planes that fly closely overhead that are getting ready to land at Logan. I think if you want to get a picnic table you'd have to arrive fairly early.... More

If you want a true Boston experience go to Castle Island, there are nothing but Southies there. Pretty park, great water views, tons of restrooms. If it's the right time of year you will see lots of sailboaders (Pleasure Bay is known world wide for it)The fort is interesting. Here's a tip have a barker at Sullys it doesn't get... More

The day we went was very windy and cold. You get nice view of Boston Harbor and monument. They have 2 walk path one is around fort and one along... More

Ok so Fort Independence is supposed to have its freaking gates open from dawn to dusk. Last I checked 4pm isn't dusk. Yet as I walk up to the entrance I kid you not there goes the park ranger shutting the gate. Seriously? Park is nice. Groomed. Nice ocean view. Fort is nice (at least from the outside). Plenty of...
