Operated by the National Park Service, this is a walking tour of Boston's 19th-century African-American history. Tthe Black Heritage Trail focuses on the emerging free black community of the 1800s and their leading efforts in the Abolition Movement, the Underground Railroad, and the early struggles for equality and justice. You can easily tag this on to the Freedom Trail if you want and definitely worth it. The tour takes you through the beautiful back streets of Beacon Hill. Even if you don't want to see the museum or are particularly interested in this part of Bostons history, you get to see some lovely real estate.

Had an excellent 1hour walk with a free tour organised by the National Parks. Very informative and interesting as it tells you a lot about the history of the African-American struggles in history. Walks are in the Beacon Hill area, up and down some slops. Well worth the walk.

I've wanted to do this tour for years and it did not disappoint! Our guide for the 2:00 tour (Amelia) happened to be a volunteer, and she was fantastic. Tons of fascinating information, encompassing American history from 1638 to present day. If you're burned out on the Freedom Trail or American history in general, take this tour. It includes early... I (Black) was joined by Whites, Asians, Old, Young. Nobody dropped out and at the end we all applauded the ranger who took us on this tour! Yes it's a little challenge if you have weak legs as we walk up/down some hills (not for long) on brick sidewalks but If there is a remote change you can do it... More

Went on this with a few classmates as we were in Boston for training. The guided tour is Mon-Sat at 2pm and free. You do NOT have to register for this. Just meet at the Gould monument. Park Ranger Quigley was very passionate and provided us with so much information at each stop. We felt like we were walking back... More

Sam Quigley tour guide is great! He is so passionate about the history it makes the tour. He a National Park Service Ranger! A fair amount of walking up and down hills (I wouldn't take a stroller) but manageable for the average person. This tour takes you through historical Beacon Hill and past John Kerry's home. There is so much... More

We did this self-guided walking tour before starting the Freedom Trail and really enjoyed the look and feeling of the neighbourhood - the plaques at the various stops were however rather lacking in information, the same issue we have with the Freedom trail. Still, a nice way to spent about two hours!

We went on a Black History Heritage Trail Tour. It is a free tour offered by the park Rangers, but you must register for it online. It starts at the Boston Commons in front of the monument of black soldiers (across from the state building) and ends at the museum. I went on this tour twice. The first time, on... More

Staying in Downtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Downtown
The largest area of the city, Downtown is rich with historical and iconic sites in Boston. Stroll through one of Boston’s most famous green spaces, the Boston Public Gardens, check out and make way for duckling statues, picnic under a beautiful tree overlooking the pond, and walk over the iconic footbridge where, during summer time, you will catch a swan boat toting children and eager tourists through the pond. Have your camera ready to capture its peaceful beauty in the middle of a bustling city. Continue on through the Gardens and take in some open green space at the Boston Common, where you can spend time throwing a frisbee, sitting on a park bench, or, in the winter time, skating on the frog pond. Head north from the end of the Common to see the golden dome of the State House, and travel through government center to Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall, both a historic and popular destination worth a quick visit for a first time to Boston. Head to Long Wharf to visit the Aquarium, or catch a boat to Charlestown or even Cape Cod.
