This two pillar bridge connects the North End downtown area with Bunker Hill. It's an impressive structure, which was nice to walk over, drive over and see it from the harbor cruise.

Walk from Fanuel Hall Marketplace over to the North End across the Memorial Park and you can see the bridge as well as the TD Garden...beautiful!

This bridge reminds me of modern bridges in Rotterdam and Dublin. Itβs known as the widest cable stayed bridge in the world and was built as part of the Big Dig in Boston which took out a raised highway through the center of downtown and put it underground. The Leonard Zakim Bridge replaced an old bridge snd opened in 2003. The concrete mirrors the Bunker Hill Memorial nearby, while the spindles or cables mirror the rigging of the USS Constitution at the Boston Naval Yard also nearby.

Ok it's a very pretty bridge. I just don't get why a modern bridge is even listed when all you do is walk or drive over a bridge.

The bridge pays homage to the bunker hill monument, look left as you are entering the city southbound. The resemblance is remarkable. It is a very pretty bridge that takes some of sting out of sitting in traffic. There is a quirky story related to it where a man climbed up a ladder in the middle of winter stole a giant aircraft beacon and left it at the oldest bar in Boston. The same bar where all the soldiers convened after the battle of Bunker Hill, only in Boston.

I used to love the elevated highway view of Boston as you entered the city from the north. But the Zakim Bridge is so much better than what we had before. It's just beautiful and has become symbolic of Boston.
If you're near the Boston Garden, you can walk back toward the State Trooper station and cross the locks to get to the Zakim Park. You can walk underneath the Zakim Bridge there and walk toward the EF building where there's a cool new skate park and a playground for kids. If you keep walking that direction, you'll go through a continuation of the park and end up near the Museum of Science. It's one of my favorite places to run through. Definitely worth a stroll if you're in the area!

A dramatic and, now, iconic architectural feature of the Boston skyline which goes beyond the aesthetic. It was named for my friend and hero, the late Lenny Zakim, who exemplified the value of bridge building throughout his life, professionally as a civil rights leader, and personally, through his work to connect the people of New England, the US and the world to one another with bonds of respect, openness and generosity. The bridge physically and philosophically represents Lenny's work, by connecting disparate communities in powerful ways.

The Zakim bridge is my favorite bridge in Boston. It's the perfect gateway to Charlestown/ the North End/ West End. It's striking at any time of the day, particularly at dusk and sparkling at night. I pass under the bridge on my way home from work everyday and it's a nice walk, much less crowded than along the streets.
You can get some great photos of the bridge walking from North Point Park in Cambridge and also from the locks from the open park on the edge of Charlestown to North Station. A unique view of downtown Boston can be seen from walking under the bridge leaving from North Point Park.
The Zakim bridge is quite a contrast compared to the other older landmarks and bridges in Boston Common, for example. It's definitely worth passing by on any visit to Boston- a place that's not mentioned in many guidebooks, but not to be missed!

Boston is one of the oldest cities in US, but that doesn't mean that stopped in time. Quite the contrary. This bridge is just one example for it! Very modern architecutre. If you decide to follow the Freedom Trail, you'll definetely see it!

The structure is ungodly ugly and far too modernistic for an old city like Boston. I wish the architect had tried to blend with the city rather than building a monument to himself.
