This was our second tour of a CA mission. They are so beautiful, peaceful, and full of history! It's amazing to wonder what actually happened during their early years in time. This mission is still active as a church. And it doesn't matter what religion you follow: The early efforts, and caring of this Mission are for all faiths.

This basillica and museum is a complex that is not only an active Catholic church but a window into the history of early San Diego. Although a cross only marks the original church and first Californian mission founded by Fr. Serra, you can find a life size replica of this new saint in the garden adjacent to the bell wall... Interesting site to visit to learn about the many facets of California history. It is a functioning church so please be respectful.

This beautiful mission has a long history. It started about 1746, the first European settlement in California. After years of deterioration, in 1931 it was restored to its present form. There is a museum, church, chapel and historical monks living quarters. There are guided and self guided tours. Admission is $5 and $3 for seniors.

I am on a Mission Tour vacation. I thought that it would have more to see.It really is nice to see the very first Mission. The church was nice. It had very steep steps to get up from the parking lot. The price for adult is 5 dollars not to bad.

Went for Christmas eve mass. Arrived 15 minutes early and there was still plenty of parking but we just barely got 2 seats together. Music was nice and they even had sign asl interpreters at the 8 pm mass.

This was a real surprise and we are happy that we included the mission in one of the few places we visited during our two day stay in San Diego. Great history, interesting architecture and a must see to get a sense of the early history of the area.

We were pretty much underwhelmed by the Mission, which seems a bit run-down.. For others who may go, due to the mission's proximity to the current stadium, going on a Sunday afternoon of a Chargers' home game can make finding parking a challenge down on the street level parking. Also, due to unclear signage, we did not realize there was... More

This is a true treasure. I went for a memorial service and was so impressed with the facility and the Father that did the service. I look forward to going back on a Sunday.

San Diego mission is the first one in California... The visit was good and we were inhered with the story that it brings along. The issue we had was that by the time we were ready to get inside the church, there was a casket right on the door for a funeral. Kids did not proceed forward and unfortunately we... More
