The iconic central library is back and open for browsing daily except for Sundays. The parking garage below is now totally automated and still has 2 hours of free parking with endorsement. Although the shop used book shop is still closed, the library "gift" shop is open with new stock and sale items. There seems to be more security guards who are actively walking through the stacks.

Beautiful Building
Feb 2020
I try to visit libraries on my travels (former librarian & teacher).

This library is a beautiful building and quite huge - 9 floors I believe! The reading room is under the dome. There are 2 shops - one selling used books and a gift shop. Everyone working, from the security, to the clerks at the gift shop, to the information desk were quite friendly.

It is wheelchair accessible.

Huge Collection of Baseball Materials
Dec 2019
My wife enjoys visiting libraries in major cities when we visit them and I was excited to learn about the SABR collection of baseball materials in the library. It is an impressive collection and features some local San Diego baseball memorabilia on one of the upper floors.

This library shares space with a charter school and has quite a stunning presence in the developing East Village. Except for baseball game nights there is free for 2 hours underground parking for library users. In addition to a wide selection of reading matter, they have a book shop, a trendy gift shop, a cafe with patio seating, and active programs -- music, talks, and more. The only downside is that this is a magnet for street people who sleep in the stacks.

San Diego Outdoes Itself with this Library
Feb 2019
Great location, ample parking, modern building with advanced technology and friendly staff. This library is a great place to do research, study, meet, or hold an event. In every aspect of the aforementioned, they are top notch. They also have a public high school and community support services on site.

Mixed emotions

Architecturally, this library is an amazing space. I walked in and was really in awe of the design, with the massive arches, simplistic wooden and concrete everywhere, huge escalators inviting you up to the books. I’ve seen photos of some of the other spaces as well, so I know it is amazing.

But there is this other side. It’s like a daytime homeless shelter. The front entrance housed lots of people with many possessions. During the recent cold, almost every computer was occupied by a homeless person, many chairs as well. At the entrance I saw something I’ve never seen before at a library: an airport like box showing that “belongings must fit in a carry-on this size”.

I understand that everyone has a right to enter the PUBLIC library, I’m just preparing you for what you may see and smell while you peruse the stacks. Maybe bring some extra snacks and pass them out!

Great location for hosting an event

The ninth floor has a spectacular meeting space. Attended an event tonight. They have indoor and outdoor space, great parking, and if you arrive early you can get work done in one of their study rooms.

This architecturally interesting structure is more than a library with an extensive collection. You can see a play or special event, go dancing under the stars, visit the art gallery, enjoy the outside café, shop at the gift store, browse the second hand book shop or listen to a free Sunday afternoon concert. In addition it houses a charter school, meeting rooms, and Geisel art work in the children's section. Park for 2 hours underground is free, unless there's a special event. I've never been bothered by homeless people due to guards (one mans an information desk in the lobby), a social worker, and vigilant staff.
