this carousel is training for astronauts

You cannot visit the Zoo and then leave, without detouring to the Carousel. The ride is probably the best value of all such entertainment in SD at $3 per adult (my toddler grandson rode for free). The ride is probably 5 minutes long. Nice! And the kids love it!

Beautiful historic carousel!
Jun 2019
This beautiful historic carousel has been lovingly restored and operates in a traditional manner by folks who appear to be passionate about it. It's a unique carousel with three rows of animals, the innermost two elevated higher than the outer row. It features all sorts of interesting hand-carved animals as well. The band organ sounds great and provides a perfect backdrop of sound. One of the best things about is that guests can still reach for the brass ring. It's affordable and a small, antique kiddie ride operates next to it as well. The operating hours are not extensive, closing at 5 p.m. even on summer weekends. Be cautious not to visit too close to the closing time as the rides with the rings can end about 30 minutes earlier and they start closing things down pretty quick,

I felt like a kid
Jul 2019 • Family
Thank goodness for my 5-year-old "buddy" who came to visit me. He gave me the opportunity to hop on this beautifully restored carousel. The ticket was only $3.00 and well worth it with a long and rather fast-moving ride. They even offered the traditional brass ring. If you were able to pull it off from the stand, you got a free ride.

Such a fun way to be a kid!

This is a great way to get back to your young roots! I suggest it for anyone! It's also right by the Zoo, a train ride, and the beautiful park where you can rest, relax, walk around, or picnic.

Nostalgia at its greatest!

Kids today might not have as
much appreciation, but this a time honored ride. Like the rest of Balboa it could use some added TLC, but is a great time!!!

Sad
Dec 2017 • Family
We went on Dec 31. I don't know if it's nicer in spring/summer but the "vegetation" around the carrousel and during the ride looked sad - it was mostly dirt and what looked like burnt branches. If you have a small kid, they will enjoy it -our 2 year old did- but don't have great expectations.

Remains Great
Jul 2017 • Family
We visited the carousel after a day Balboa Park. Although the children are older than 5 years ago when we visited last, the carousel remains great fun. A lovely example of an old fashioned carousel the brass ring game remains a must.

Nothing beats this carousel anywhere. The music and memories will be imbedded in anyone's memory forever. Go back in time and ride your antique animal into a land of fantasy and adventure.
A must do when you are here.

Disappointed
Mar 2017 • Family
The whole family was rather disappointed. Perhaps our children were simply too old for it, but they were greatly disappointed. They'd been much more thrilled before we'd gotten there and we left way before expected. Huge disappointment. Probably good for people of younger age.

Timeless fun

No matter how old you are , you can enjoy a carousel. This one has antique animals and seats to ride on. It has the brass ring to try for, which is everyone's favorite. Nothing puts you in a better mood than riding a carousel.
