We were in Chinatown and the kids needed to burn some energy. We found this park on our walk. Very lively with a nice playground and sand pit. Good stop. Also some courts. Benches are a little old, but at least there is a place to sit and watch the kids play.

This a haven of green space in Lower Manhattan in the perimeter of Chinatown is a park for people of all ages and provide a good view of everyday life in this corner of the city.

The Sara D Roosevelt park stretches along 2nd Ave. it’s 7.8 acres in total. Basketball, all weather playing pitch as well.

I stopped by the Sara D Roosevelt Park while waiting for a wine dinner to start in the Rebelle restaurant a couple of blocks away.
The garden was particularly beautiful; the park benches were very comfortable; and the playgrounds further uptown were filled with lots of happy kids.
A great place to rest for a bit.

Manhattan Chinatown is not all art galleries (hipsters), confectionery shops (2nd and 3rd gen Asian Americans), and fake handbags (tourists). This is a real neighborhood with people who live here on a daily basis, and Sara D Roosevelt Park is a great public space that shows a huge range of how people socialize and exercise. It's got playgrounds, basketball courts, and soccer fields. Nearby is a school with a track that is often filled with people. There is so much happening, and fortunately nearby Museum of Chinese in America (215 Centre St) created a map that includes a list and explanation of the activities that happen in the park. Very insightful. I came here with that map and learned a lot, even though I didn't hop into one of the evening outdoor social dances or join a morning exercise group in their routine. I have, however, come to play basketball in the mornings on occasion or eaten my dinner on a park bench while watching NY recreational soccer league teams play in a night game. Lots to see!! Great for families and teens.

Unremarkable park. Useful for people living in the area, will probably never be on any visitor's itinerary.

My wife read about Sara Delano Roosevelt Park and we decided to travel from our hotel on the upper west side to Chinatown to see and hear the songbirds that locals bring to the park on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Although both of us had previously worked at the federal building (26 Federal Plaza) over the years, which was only just a few blocks away, we hadn't known of the park's existence before this trip.
According to the article we read in the Times, the locals bring the birds for a "competition" and we were most interested in witnessing this. However, we arrived after 10:00AM on Saturday and most of the birds had already been taken home. We'll come earlier next time.
Still, there were about ten bird cages with their feathered friends and a few of them were willing to entertain us. After listening for a while, we wandered around the 7-acre park and playground.
Asian high school kids were playing basketball and I was surprised to see two young women playing with the guys. They could shoot the lights out of the basket!
Old men were sitting on benches, smoking cigarettes and conversing in Mandarin or Cantonese.
A group of about thirty Asian folks were grouped together listening to a boom box blasting Chinese songs. Several of the old-timers were dancing while another group of men were playing cards, slapping them down on a city concrete table.
Couples walked through the several gardens, a few brought their dogs to escape the city's urban sprawl and experience a bit of nature in the heart of it all.
The commute via the 2 train, the Times Square shuttle and the 6 train to Bleecker Street was rather easy from the upper west side. You could also hop on the F train and get off at around 2nd Avenue. We just walked over from Bleecker to Houston and Chrystie Streets.
Afterwards, you can spend a day (or a lifetime) exploring the rest of Chinatown. We had other plans and took a hike to the West Village to visit McNultey's on Christopher Street--a must visit for tea lovers.
Roosevelt Park is a little gem that you would otherwise miss. Check out the songbirds on Sunday morning!
