It was the first building higher than 1000 ft built in the world. It has 77 floors and it was built in 1930, In 1976, the Chrysler Building was declared a National Historic Landmark, and a New York City Landmark in 1978. I loved its lobby, one of the finest examples of Art Deco in New York. The mural that covers the entire ceiling was wonderful. A must visit, not only for Art Deco fans.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 12 December 2023
- Greg HarrisBronx, New York2,072 contributionsGreg & Kat’s Chrysler Building Experience. The Chrysler Building is one of New York’s most iconic skyscrapers and one of the world’s most revered buildings. Owned by both Signa Holding & RFR Holding, the Chrysler Building stands at 1,046 feet tall, and is considered the tallest brick building in the world with steel framework. The building was constructed and designed by Walter Chrysler, the late founder & head of the Chrysler Corporation. Mr. Chrysler worked with noted architect, William Van Halen to design the Chrysler Building, and wanted it to be used as a real estate investment for the benefit of his children. The Chrysler Building has been showcased in many popular films ranging from “Independence Day” “Deep Impact,” “ the Avengers” and “Men in Black 3.” Due to its distinctive design, architectural features and rich heritage, the Chrysler Building has been recognized as a New York City Landmark, listed on the National Register Of Historic Places and has been designated as a U.S. National Historic Landmark. In February of 2024, I brought my wife and myself to view and visit the Chrysler Building when celebrating our Happy Six Year Wedding Anniversary!!! We both enjoyed viewing the building, especially the building’s 31st floor gargoyles, the Chrysler radiator caps and it’s amazing Art Deco style crown and spire. In addition to viewing the building, I brought and treated my wife and myself for dinner at the Capital Grille, a world renowned upscale fine dining restaurant located inside the Chrysler Building. My wife and I highly enjoyed our meal and service at the Capital Grill and definitely recommend for everyone to visit and dine at this outstanding steakhouse restaurant!!! When visiting New York City, both my wife and I recommend that you definitely make to time to see and visit the Chrysler Building!!!Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 March 2024

My other half is an art and design buff so we entered the lobby. They are quite firm about where you can stand but if you're polite there is no issue. We took a lot of photos. Well worth visiting.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 March 2024

The Chrysler is hailed as the best building in New York City, if not the world. The Chrysler Building view puts the Empire State Building in a second place in architectural terms. As a Midtown skyscraper, the Chrysler Buidling is New York's unmatched leader.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 June 2024

It is tall and can be seen from lots of different parts of town. It is an office building, nice to look at, but tourists should not expect to wander inside easily.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 August 2024

The Chrysler Building is one of New York’s most notable skyscrapers and one of the world’s most revered buildings.
In May of 2018, I brought myself and my wife for a visit to the Chrysler Building to celebrate our Happy Four Year Relationship Anniversary!!!
Owned by both the Signa Holding & RFR Holding, the Chrysler Building was fully constructed in 1930 by Walter Chrysler of the Chrysler Corporation and it was designed by architect, William Van Alen.
Standing at 1,046 tall, the Chrysler Building has been showcased in many popular films, such as Independence Day, Deep Impact, the Avengers and Men in Black 3.
While the Chrysler Building lacks an observation deck, the building does allow visitors to come and see it’s gorgeous Art Deco designed hall on the ground floor. Both my wife and I very much enjoyed viewing the Art Deco hall and took great pictures!!!

22/02/2023 met at the entrance of the building by the head of security abusing people who entered before we did. What a awful man. People trust me you don't want to go. He told us it's been closed to the public for three years. Nasty chap but it didn't ruin our day

The Chrysler Building was, for just under a year, the tallest structure in the world. until it was surpassed by the Empire State Building. The Chrysler Buildng is an Art Deco icon, a materpiece of Modernism. It's by far the best-looking skyscraper in New York City. The building is famous for its spire and eagle gargoyles. It's planned to create an observation deck on the 61st floor in the near future.

The Chrysler Building is a masterpiece of Art Deco architecture. It was completed in 1930, in the depths of the Great Depression. The building was wholly owned by Walter Chrysler. Chrysler intended that the skyscraper would be a reflection of the Modernism embodied in Chrysler automobiles. The Chrysler Building was the tallest building in the world for a brief period. Although the Empire State Building was taller, many observers think that he Chrysler Building is an outstanding landmark of Art Deco design. It is probably the most striking building in NYC.

Once the tallest building in the world when completed in 1930, it was eclipsed by the Empire State Building 11 months later. However, it remains a stunning architectural masterpiece and is considered one the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in the world. The iconic skyscraper seems to pop up into view around every turn when walking around midtown Manhattan near Grand Central Station.

An Art Deco classic. The building is visible from many blocks around, and is spectacular as it gleams in the sunlight. Truly an icon of design and architecture.
The lobby is open to visitors, and gives a sense of the glamour of NYC in times gone by. Lovely details to observe on the walls, elevator doors, and ceilings.

First time in New York and I wanted to visit the Chrysler building. My wife and myself only just walked into the lobby area when an aggressive security guard started shouting at us ‘this is not a public area, you need to leave’ - he kept repeating this and was really ignorant. I said no problem, we didn’t know, we are tourists and perhaps it would be a good idea to put a notice on the entrance door to that effect. My New York travel guide is obviously now out of date as it said entry was allowed to the lobby area .
The security guard needs some training on how to speak to members of the public.

I’ve loved the architecture of the Chrysler Builder for years. So you can imagine our disappointment when my wife and I I were in NYC recently and decided to walk by and take some photos. Not a problem until we entered the famously beautiful lobby and we were aggressively (e.g., not politely) told that we had to immediately leave the building. We are two seniors, retired professionals and dressed very nicely. Not street riff-raff. This was a huge disappointment - AVOID.

My 8 yo and I entered, masked of course, on Monday 8/16/2021 at 1:30pm and were immediately ordered out of the lobby by a security guard. We asked if the lobby would ever be open to the public and he poorly communicated that we were not and would not ever be welcome there. What the heck?

Hi, is there tour to visit the building? can I easely visit it on my own or do I have to take the tour?

No tours are offered. All you can see is the lobby

There is no viewing deck at the Chrysler building; currently, the best panorama of the New York City skyline is The Top of the Rock at Rockefeller center high above the skating rink; it costs around $28 dollars for adults to stay as long as they want; it is without question the best view in New York........
Written 19 February 2017
The viewing deck at the Chrysler Building has been closed for decades, so get your Manhattan views either at 30 Rock or the Empire State, or the magnificent One World Trade observatory downtown.
BUT, don't miss the Chrysler Bldg...the others are just high views; this building is pure art, like nothing else in the world. The very coolest introduction to it is a short old BBC Documentary hosted by actor John Malkovich. It online on YouTube. Search for BBC documentary, Chrysler Bldg, Malkovich.
You'll see the unforgettable lobby with its 30 elevators, the largest ceiling mural in the world (for its time), and the decor that was the absolute peak of the Art Deco style. Malcovich takes you up to the top, and you see the world famous eagle-headed gargoyles up close, and the original private quarters of Mr. Chrysler. Wildest of all, there is old film of the architect wearing a hat in the shape of the famous spire of the building at the opening celebration in 1929/30, and a group of dancers dressed as "Machine Men" prancing around the parapets. Best of all, you'll see the absolutely stunning array of pointed windows culminating in the sharp spire...with great shots of it all, by day and by night.

Is their a ticket which covers the viewing platform and a meal in the centre.
Written 18 February 2017
Bear in mind that any building you go up will not have that building in the view, so I would recommend going up the rock or one world, as you'll want the Chrysler or the empire state in your view. And eat somewhere else entirely as you'll be paying well over the odds at any of those buildings.

Hi,
Curious to those who mentioned going to the top - how do we go about getting tickets?
We'll be there in late September?
Thanks in advance,

Hi! I agree with previous reviews! The lobby shouldn't be missed!
Marvellous indeed!!!!

One of the reviews mentioned buying tickets for the Chrysler Building. What is included in the ticket price?
Written 4 February 2015
The lobby is the only part of the building that is open to the public and there is no charge for entry. The lobby is beautiful with lots of art-deco details, wonderful intricate woodwork and a lovely ceiling mural. Spectacular architecture both inside and out.
