Great views, interesting special events, uncrowded and easy to get to. Not open year round so you need to check dates before heading down to the ferry. Also it is best to make a reservation. Sometimes it is busy especially if a special event is going on. Had an interesting tour with a park ranger. Brought our bikes on the... More

Originally built as a sister fort to the one in the Battery, the National Monument was intended as a protection for Manhattan (or New York City). It was for many years a prison. It is interesting, I think, to take a look at it, but if one's time in New York is limited you might skip it in favor of... More

Come for art shows, musical events, walking and seeing historical sites. Short free (early daytime) ferry ride to the island. You can spend hours here enjoying the solitude off the beaten path, or be in with the crowds at events. Watch the boats go by, ignore the helicopters overhead. Enjoy the breeze and views.

A short ferry ride across and then into groups with very enthusiastic and entertaining guides. This old Naval defence was interesting I was surprised though at how it had been left to go derelict, due of course to lack of funds.

I had lived in the city a year or so before visiting. It was love at first sight. Great Ferry ride, the best views of downtown Manhattan, amazing opportunity to exercise on foot or by bike with some interesting events. Good quality souvenir T-shirts and fun cafes. The only draw back is that it is currently only open May to... More

What a wonderful place, only $2.00 per adult on the ferry from next to the Staten Island ferry, took about 10 minutes if that to get across, you can hire bikes including Surrey bikes, there is a play area with poles and nets to navigate, the slides in the hills at the far end are a good idea, but be... We had a few hours to spare and thought that a ferry trip over to the island would be fun. The trip was short and smooth. Very cheap. However, the island itself has nothing really to attract the everyday tourist.

The ferry only takes a few minutes to whisk you from the bustle of the financial district to this peaceful enclave where you can stroll and view the old army barracks and an old fort. Also, great view of the Statue of Liberty from here.

Great place to visit. Awesome views great history and food. Amazing walks and the water taxi is a fun trip to and from. Totally worth it. It's busy watch out on the weekend.
