SENIORS BEWARE!
The bathroom situation at the John Golden theater creates a danger to seniors who may be forced to stand on a narrow staircase due to the fact that the bathrooms are only in the basement. No signage or age appropriate access is provided. Staff is limited. Security personnel act like bouncers and are threatening. My wife and I suffered through this harrowing experience on May 19th at a matinee performance and were so upset and ill that we had to leave mid performance. A weak apology was provided by the manager and nothing of any consequence has been forthcoming from the Shubert Organization.

Very sensitive show with an incredible message. Would watch this a million times. The venue is not as big as other Broadway theaters, but beautiful and the staff is great. Access was fast, bathrooms were clean, seats are comfortable. Thank you, Jodie Comer and Susie Miller for bringing this to Broadway.

This was our first experience of a Broadway theatre and overall it was impressive. We took in Skylight starring Bill Night and Carey Mulligan which was excellent. The theatre itself was compact but views from everywhere are excellent. The facilities are good but space around the back is limited, there did seem to be issues surrounding the ladies toilets. The upstairs bar in particular is somewhat cramped with next to no seating. The doors only opened around half an hour before the show started and all the staff go out of their way to remind you that no drinks can be taken into the show, even conducting extremely thorough searches. The barman in particular was keen to stress that drinking time was limited. Overall though the ticket price was reasonable and the experience well worth it.

This review is about the theater itself. The golden theater is small, but offers a great view, especially from the first row balcony which is where we sat. We saw the show Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike which I highly recommend. If the show hadn't been so excellent, I would have minded the small seats a lot more.
I am a plus-size woman 5'9" 285 lbs. and my husband is 6'3" 350 lbs. We each fit into our seats, but my husband said if the performance would have been any longer, he would have had to leave due to knee discomfort. I minded the armrests digging into my sides a bit, but it wasn't too bad.
From arm to arm, seat width is only 17.5 inches. From seat back to seat back it is only 28 inches. In the front row of the balcony you will get an additional inch of depth for a whopping 29 inches. If you have knee problems, or have very long legs, I don't recommend this theater. The balcony's steps are steep and with no room to extend your legs, you will be hurting. There are a few seats on the first floor in the very front row on the sides of the stage that allow you to extend your legs, but everyone else is packed in like sardines.
Bathrooms are downstairs below the first floor and very small. The ushers were rather surly and unhelpful, but its New York so I didn't expect much of them. If you are seeing a great show, this theater is tolerable; otherwise it may be downright torturous.

Whether currently or in the future most of us will be touched by the ravaging disease that is dementia. The Waverly Gallery, a play currently showing in the Golden Theatre, allows us to share the experiences of a family dealing with this. You take a peek into the life of a prominent NYC family as they deal with the decline of the matriarch of the family that has dementia. The topic of the play is very heavy. The writing was excellent and thought provoking! I'm a musical theater geek but this play was a wonderful experience. I love the Golden Theatre! It was small but a wealth of good seats and comfort!!

On February 14 2015 my wife attended a Delicate Balance and watched from seats on the third row. The two main actors, Glen Close and John Lithgow are truly excellent actors and their spontinaity deserves accolades.
However, the play is a complete bomb. No acting could overcome a ridiculous plot and bad writing. We should have walked out at the first intermission but for some illogical reason we thought it had to get better. It never did.
Save your time and money see a musical.

I bought a low price seat in the very back row and proceeded to get headphones. I walked up to the very back row and was very comfortable. Hangman had heavy English access even with the headphones it was difficult to understand. By the second act the headphones started beeping. I could not hear the play but because I was so far up and the fact that I’m 67 years old I have size 17 shoes I did not make it down in the dark to tell them that the hearing headphones did not work. The entire second act was a complete waist I have no idea what went on. I was so disappointed. It was the sex show that I’ve seen in a week and I have to say the worst experience I’ve had on Broadway in a long time. As a staircase been lit enough I could’ve walked out and missed a lot of the play to get a new set of hearing devices. I would’ve bothered everybody because I have to hold onto the rail because my feet are so big. I will never go see another playbat the Golden theater

Beautiful theater! Absolutely phenomenal and must see play “Thoughts of a Colored Man”! My view was great and the sound was awesome. My only complaint is the late seating, some patrons were extremely late and interrupted important scenes in the play. Seating was also very tight and uncomfortable.

Went to this play on Friday, October 12, 2019. It is TRASH !
We left after the first fifteen minutes which were filled with three different pornographic scenes. We did not expect such TRASH.
It was a waste of our valuable time and money. Put a damper on our vacation.

Do you have devices to help the hearing impaired? If so, is there a price for getting one?
Written 28 October 2022
Is there refreshments and snacks available? Also my train is delayed today, if i head directly to the theatre is there a coat check wete I can leave a small bag?
Written 2 March 2018
Re refreshments and snacks? Yes, they are, but they are very overpriced. Best to go to a local deli first and get what you want.
You will not be allowed to bring anything into the theater.
Coat Check. Most theaters provide them. However, the line at the end of the performance will be very long! Be prepared. U can also go to a local hotel and they may check your bag for a few $$$.

How much leg room is there for people sitting in the front row (Row A orchestra) and the front wall of the stage? 2 ft?, 3 ft? more?
Written 22 February 2018
Generally speaking, these rows are among the tightest. You can call the theater at (212) 239-6200 and ask them directly. These old theaters are like economy airline seats.

How many stairs to the balcony?
Written 28 December 2015
The mezzanine is located on the second level of the Golden Theatre up three flights of stairs for a total of 28 steps. Once on the mezzanine level there are approximately 2 steps per row. Entrance to the mezzanine is behind row D.
