About
An oasis of peace amid Manhattan’s hustle and bustle, Roosevelt Island offers great views of the New York City skyline and the East River. Stroll along the riverfront promenade from the 14-acre Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park in the south all the way up to the northern tip, where you can relax on the grass outside the Roosevelt Island Lighthouse. If you’re hungry, stop by one of the cafes, delis, and restaurants along Main Street. You can ride the subway to Roosevelt Island, but the tramway runs frequently and offers scenic views along the way. – Tripadvisor

- therichastillStevenage, United Kingdom3,462 contributionsSuperb Views of ManhattanRoosevelt Island is tucked on the side of Manhattan Island. There is a road bridge linking it to Queens and there is also a cable car which can take you across the East River to the island from Manhattan where the terminal is on 2nd Avenue. I would definitely recommend this as a good way to get to the island. You can use your metro card to get across there and swipe again to get back. There are terminals at both stations that you can use to get a metro card of top up your existing one. Alternatively you can use your debit or credit card. There are a number of buildings on the island with offices and apartments. At the southern end of the island is the park and there are lots of lovely views from the island of the surrounding area. The Queensboro Bridge bisects the island however it is not possible to access the island from the bridge or vice versa. use the cable car instead.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 16 October 2023

My friends offered to show me around. This was a great way to spend a beautiful Sunday. It was sunny with clear blue skies, and most of the cherry blossoms were blooming. We took a comfortable stroll on the riverfront promenade, which was crowded with families, picnickers, and tons of people taking selfies. As you walk along the promenade, you'll come across the dilapidated ruins of the Smallpox Memorial Hospital before arriving at the 14-acre Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park in the south all the way up to the northern tip. Keep walking and you'll see the Roosevelt Island Lighthouse and the amazing statues commemorating the ground-breaking work by American journalist, Nellie Bly. Other than the promenade, there's not much to see or do. There are plenty of parks for recreational activities and playgrounds for little ones. There are no restaurants or delis, besides a few Chinese takeout places and a Duane Reade. I recommend bringing food or eating first before you come. I really enjoyed the walk, and it wasn't that crowded. I can imagine how busy and crowded the island will be when summer officially arrives.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 8 April 2024
- Sacha🇲🇬Antananarivo, Madagascar38 contributionsA nice escape from busy NYCIf you're looking for a quiet place to go in NYC, Roosevelt Island is one of those places. Hop on the tram or the subway at standard MTA fare and ride the RI buses for free through the island. The choice is yours between exploring the lighthouse and the girl puzzle monument at the northern point or strolling through the park and the remnants of the smallpox hostpital at the southern point.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 19 April 2024

Then walked the southern tip to the Roosevelt memorial. Great views all around. - Cathie MPhnom Penh, Cambodia282 contributionsA getaway from the city hustle and bustleGreen space and peacefulness next to Manhattan. Walked the length of the island on a beautiful day. Took the subway there and the tramway (a must!) back to Manhattan. Stopped twice to relax at cafés and once for lunch. Watched part of a local soccer match and walked through the community garden run by RI Garden Club volunteers. Lots of families were out for a stroll, and some took picnics. If I worked in Manhattan, I might want to live on RI.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 14 June 2024
- TravelingSoccerLoonSaint Paul, Minnesota6,573 contributionsSleepy Island in the East River with Nice Views of Manhattan and Accessed by Aerial TramwayThis island in the middle of the East River feels worlds away from bustling Manhattan. You can take the F train to get here or ride the unique Roosevelt Island Tramway that rides alongside the Queensboro Bridge and high above the East River offering interesting views of the river and Manhattan skyline. We were staying in Queens and walked here across the Roosevelt Island Bridge and then strolled along the riverside promenade which offers nice views of Manhattan across the East River. It's a peaceful although somewhat sleepy place. Not really a lot to do here but if you're looking for some peace and quiet this might be okay. On the northern end of the island is the Roosevelt Island Lighthouse and Park. On the southern end is the FDR Four Freedoms State Park where you can see a memorial and the ruins of a former Smallpox Hospital from 1854.Visited August 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 14 June 2024
- grrprrTallahassee, Florida414 contributionsA different side of NYCRI is one of top five go to spots each summer when I visit the city. As many point out, it’s an oasis just a stones throw from the organized chaos of the city. It’s about a four mile walk to circle the island, but there is plenty of shade and places to sit. Each end of the island offers great views and a relaxing place to reflect. This was my first visit since the completion of the Cornell complex. They did a nice job of incorporating the building into the existing space with its own plaza area.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 3 July 2024

Once you come out of the subway or tramway, there is a red bus stand, that will take you to the northern part of the island for no charge, but there are no signs anywhere. If you don't do research, you won't know what to do! At the northern tip, there is a sculpture garden and a small lighthouse, nice area to relax and take the view in.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 July 2024

These include the Roosevelt Island tram, the abandoned smallpox hospital, Lighthouse park, the Four Freedoms State Park, and the amazing views of Manhattan’s east side of course. There are also many restaurants, a hotel, and a free red bus on the island. There are many parks, and overall, Roosevelt Island is a great place to spend your afternoon. The tram is an unbearable experience and a waste of money. It's two swipes of the omni card and the crowds were aggressive ridiculous. The lines were literally down the block and by the time we got to the platform, which was packed like sardines, everyone was ready to kill eachother. Apparently the residents hate the tourists and were downright hostile. Not only was it packed with people but there were like 10 baby strollers too. We were stuck in the middle of the tram car, literally squished between people, could barely see out of the windows to take in what I assume were great views, and before we knew it, although not soon enough, the trip was over and we had to get off, pay again and get back on another crowded car to go back to Manhattan. The island was kind of cool, I guess, but not worth the aggravation at all. We enjoyed Central Park and the ferry much more. Very overrated.

The Roosevelt Island Tram was unique with its city views. The nature aspect was nice with plenty of space to explore or watch sunsets across the river. The FDR memorial was interesting and well done. I visited the island later in the day and had about an hour and a half before darkness crept up on me. After enjoying the park and city views across the river, I attempted a walk around the permitted of the small island. Many posts have said the island is safe, but there were many spots along the perimeter that were isolated and I did not feel safe (as a woman traveling solo). There was a small center area with cute shops that I would visit if I came again - during the daytime. And I would visit the FDR memorial more thoroughly. This isn’t a first time visit to NYC must see, but it was a nice filler near the end of the trip when you might need a break from the crowds and high energy of the city. Btw the tram works the same as the subways for payment, so it was super quick and easy to pay and get on.

Having visited NYC and Manhattan many times I had never been to, or to be frank didn't even know about, Roosevelt Island (RI). So on a trip in December 2021 I decided to take the RI Tramway from 59th Street over to the Island and I am glad I did as the Tram ride was exciting (only 4 minutes long but great fun) and RI itself was interesting. It gave great views across the river to Manhattan, the FDR Four Freedoms Park was great, as was the Lighthouse, the Smallpox Hospital ruins were interesting and there are shops and restaurants too all easily accessible on foot or using the free shuttle bus service. Go into the Visitor Center to get a Map ($1) of the Island to help you explore. Well worth a visit to get a break from the noise and bustle of the City.

Interesting trip to Roosevelt Island which felt other worldly somehow - very quiet but looking across the water to busy Manhattan. After getting off the tram we walked North along the waterfront to the old lighthouse and sculptures at the headland before returning to the tram station. If we had not had had more time we would have completed the loop of the island by walking South. There are lots of apartments on the island (and also a large rehab centre) with a few cafes and a Starbucks. Maybe it was because it was winter that it felt so cut off? We enjoyed the walk, the views and the sculptures!

Unusual and pleasant destination in New York, far from the chaos that affects many areas of the city. I recommend reaching it with the Tramway, the cheap and rapid cable car that crosses the short space of river that separates it from Manhattan, to admire beautiful views of the Big Apple. On the island it is possible to walk peacefully among its parks and streets and, by crossing the Queensboro Bridge or the Roosevelt Bridge, it is possible to reach Queens to visit other fascinating attractions of the city.

I saw a picture of "The Girl Puzzle Monument honoring Nellie Bly" and wanted to see it up close. This is one of the best art installations that I've ever seen. The work is beautiful but is also in a gorgeous location. It's located in the Lighthouse Park on Roosevelt Island. The installation's backdrop of the skyline and the East River adds to the beautification of the art. Will definitely visit again.

Roosevelt island is a great place to see the city - downtown & especially uptown in its glory away from the crowds of the city. Hardly anyone comes here. Make your tou walk all the way to the smallpox hospital ruins. There are nice benches on the way to sit & enjoy the view. Highly recommend this!

Not just for fans of FDR, Roosevelt Island has something for anyone looking for views of midtown, and the peace that comes from green spaces surrounded by water.
If you are a fan of the man, make a pilgrimage to the tip of the island and Four Freedoms Park.
The cafeteria at Cornell tech has great food at reasonable prices. Sit in the sun on the terrace looking up at ther Queensboro Bridge and Manhattan slurping a Strawberry Kick smoothie and feel grateful for all this city has to offer.

As a resident of RI I am dismayed at the mismanaged of tram traffic to RI. Residents are shoved aside by tourists who have little respect for seniors or disabled people. It’s a cheap thrill for tourists but please know the tram has had some critical safety incidents in the past . It is a joy ride for you but for residents who have to wait over an hour to get on , it’s a nightmare. Please think twice before you use the tram and respect those who reside here. Thank you

We were on Roosevelt Island on August 31, 2019, and there were plenty of grills available — in fact, only one was in use and this was around 11:15 in the morning. I hope this helps.

Diane H: You said you took the tram in the morning. Was there a long line? I am assuming there is rush hour traffice, but maybe in the morning it is going from the island to Manhattan. Thanks
Written 28 March 2018
You have to remember that the Tram is not a tourist attraction. It is a way that people who live on Roosevelt Island get back and forth from work (that and the subway).
If you want to go the island and walk around, I suggest taking the F train over before 9:30am in the morning and take it back from the island or just take it after rush hour (before 9:30am and anytime after 5:30pm). Also, do not travel on it in bad weather.
While on the island, don't miss Piccolo Trattoria for pizza on the on the Roosevelt Island side near the tram. Their food is really good.
Written 29 March 2018
There are several but there seems to be one of everything. Not too many choices. I can recommend Piccolo Trattoria right near the tram for pizza. I thought it was very good (See reviews on TripAdvisor) and it is in the center of everything. Don't forget to go to FDR Park at the tip of the island and Lighthouse Park on the other tip of the island. Also, on the Cornell Tech campus, there is a small cafe/restaurant that is open to the public and I stopped there for a snack after a walking tour of the southern part of the island. It is also very good. Don't miss the tram ride on a sunny day, it is quite a site!

Go to the Roosevelt Island Historical Society Building just as you get off the tram. It is right around the corner when they are open during the day. That would be the best approach.
