The area
Neighbourhood: Greenwich Village
Commonly known as “the Village” to New Yorkers, it was here in Greenwich Village that both 1960’s counter culture and the LGBT movement were born. Famous for its bohemian past, head to Washington Square Park to get a feel for this diverse and energetic neighbourhood. You’ll find NYU students, street performers, skateboarders, kids frolicking in the fountain, and locals relaxing and playing chess. Stroll the streets to discover a mix of majestic town homes and hidden bars and restaurants that give this neighbourhood an old-school residential feel. When the sun goes down, check out one of the famous jazz or comedy clubs that still packs them in every night.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I've always wanted to visit Greenwich Village, and I figured Gay Street would be the place to start. There's a few bookstores in the area, of which my favorite was probably Three Lives And Company (154 West 10th Street), a warm little shop with radio music and a wonderful selection. Crowds were no problem since it's a bit out of the way, and it seemed - by far - friendlier. There are a few hairdressers and fashion places, along with a little grocery store, which has sit down tables for those who just want coffee and a muffin, but a selection of jams and fruit available too. If you're ever looking for somewhere just a bit more quiet but still interesting, Gay Street is the place to go.

This short street on the western fringe of Greenwich Village would even be cute without the play on words inherent in the orientation of some of the locals here. Just the name haws propelled rents nearby into the upper stratosphere.

Great Spot in the city that is often photographed and sold as a souvenir. Actaully a cool spot where lots of good places to eat are but otherwise just another street on the lower west side near the west side highway.
