- Georgia J41 contributionsThe NYC Subway 🚇🗽I did use Uber from and to JFK airport for reliability, but I was able to visit many cities in a few days (Brooklyn, Manhattan, Harlem…… just to name a few) by just hopping on the Subway though. It is by far the cheapest, easiest & fastest way to get around NYC if you need to go anywhere! Bring cash and a debit card to get a metro card for single trips at one of the machines at the station. The cards only cost maybe $3 and some change. Pay close attention to the signs. You might think you’re going ~uptown~ when you were supposed to be going ~downtown~ like me. 🤦🏽♀️ But an operator let me get back on the train after letting them know what had happened, thankfully. They probably experience that all the time with travelers. Good Luck!Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 17 September 2023
- Slobodan FToronto, Canada75 contributionsBest way to go around the city. When entering subway, in the city, do know first exactly where are you going, direction, train number... we thought all stations have underground connection to the other direction, like in Toronto... Assuming so, we payed the ticket and went in the wrong direction entrance. When returning to JFK, by subway, get off from the subway on the second to the last stop, to transfer to the airport train. Not at the very last stop.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 November 2023
- therichastillStevenage, United Kingdom3,225 contributionsBetter than I Feared!I had heard some real horror stories about the New York Subway so it was with a little trepidation that I boarded my first Subway train from 59th Street Columbus. Fortunately I had done a bit of homework beforehand by looking at various videos on Youtube to give me an idea of what to expect and potential pitfalls. You can buy a Metrocard from a vending machine and this will cost $1 on top of whatever credit you put onto the card. You can also check your metrocard balance by putting it in machines which is useful. Alternatively you can pay for your fare by tapping your credit or debit card. One of the top tips I found was to look for the chequered band on the wall opposite the platform as this is where the conductor is located on the train. This is really helpful as if you are unfamiliar you can ask someone who will be able to help you when the train arrives. Whilst I was in New York I used the subway a few times to go to different destinations in Brooklyn, Queens and getting around Manhattan. As long as you keep your wits about you and mind your own business then travelling on the subway is just the same as travelling in many other cities like Paris, London or Toronto.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 16 November 2023
- djlit47Ipswich, United Kingdom94 contributionsAn experience not to be missedWe were a little bit nervous about travelling on the Metro, but having used it for two days whilst in NYC would definitely recommend it for getting round the city and seeing the various sights. For 2.75 dollars per trip, value for money. We used our debit cards all the time. The cost remains as $2.75 as long as you do not exit barriers. This allows you to connect to different routes without having to pay again. A one day 'hop on hop off bus would cost us $88. Use the Metro for sightseeing at a fraction of the cost.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 20 November 2023
- francine dDelson, Canada27 contributionsMetrocard NYCDO NOT BUY A METROCARD! We purchased an unlimited card for 7 days for 34$ US. The cards are very “picky”. If you are too fast, too slow, have a hesitation when swiping: it does not work! Highly frustrating system. The attending staff are not at all stations so I ended up paying with apple pay. When there is an employee (all of them very nice and helpful) they can let you in. Better option: use your tap and go option. The maximum you will pay is 34$ for the week!Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 24 May 2024
- BatchFamYukon, Oklahoma1,139 contributionsDo Not Buy a Metro Card!Do not buy the metro card. Ours was so finicky and flimsy that it rarely worked. We asked attendants for help and were told we’d have to mail it in for a refund. We used the tap and go omny option which was much better. No issues at all. We ride it a lot, mostly red and orange lines. Most of it is clean and safe for the largest city in the US. I used google to map routes and saved them.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 May 2024
- FLHarlockTavares, Florida4,951 contributionsMass transit at its best!Visiting NYC from Florida and staying in midtown. Took the 1 train down to south ferry and had an excellent adventure. Easy access, cheap fare, and no problems finding my way. MTA is the best in the world. If you want to get somewhere in NYC quickly and inexpensive, the subway is where it’s at. Highly recommended!Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 7 June 2024
- FIL MLondon, United Kingdom661 contributionsNavigation easy, but could do with investmentThe subway was a great way to go across the city when travelling a larger distance. It is easy to navigate and cost wise is quite reasonable. That being said you can tell that many of the stations as well as the subway trains themselves require investment and improvement. Many stations also do not have accessibility for those who may have physical impairments or frailty.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 10 July 2024
- Bernburgerin1Heidelberg, Germany254 contributionsOften hot stations and cold subway cars - but a good and cheap way to get aroundIn summer, some stations can be very hot and subway cars can be very cold. The mosaic in the stations is usually nice and easy to see and navigate. As long as you know that 23rd can be green, yellow, etc., you can navigate the city quite easily. Updown, downtown also helps. Some stations are only open at certain times (like green 28th has an access called 27th which looks great but is only open Monday-Friday 7am-7pm). The OMNY card was a great investment. Even though we only stayed for 5 days, we exceeded the 7 day limit. So it was a good investment.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 27 August 2024

I suppose there is no good way to move millions of people around every day, but the New York subway has a lot of room for improvement. The newer coaches have electronic sign boards with stations listed, but on the older ones you had better be able to understand the conductor's accent. If you are somewhat claustrophobic or have an autistic or other special needs child, don't even think about as you go hurling through the tube underground with a few hundred new friends. On the weekend I rode the A line from JFL to and through Manhattan and back, an entire section of track was closed which meant riding a shuttle bus to the next operating stop (Euclid to Rockway) which was an absolute zoo. If I go again, I will uber or taxi instead of going down to the long narrow lonely dank and dirty stations and cars.

This is one of the great subway systems in the world - right up there with London, Moscow and Beijing, each of which I have ridden. An amazing means of travel throughout the city, with frequent departures on an extensive array of lines. To make this work the lines are built one atop another - at times three deep. Over several days in New York I always felt safe (keeping in mind that I was back in my hotel by 10:00pm). For any visitor using the system for at least three days the weeklong unlimited pass at $33 is a great value.
But I have a serious complaint about the lack of accessibility for people with limited mobility. There are few escalators and virtually no elevators. How is it that this great city is willfully failing to include those with disabilities in this system? This a shame.

While the NYC train system is pretty efficient at getting you from point A to point B around the city. I will never use it again. If you're from an area of the country where masks are not mandated and/or considered unnecessary, beware of the NY MTA. I got pulled aside by MTA security officers who were staked out just inside the turnstiles "after" people pay their entrance fee. The officer insisted on writing me a ticket because I did not have a facemask on. I don't wear a facemask because I've had COVID and recovered and have immunity, so I neither get it or give it anymore. Anyway, I offered to put on a facemask just to satisfy the officer, and he insisted that that didn't matter and he would write the ticket anyway. Considering that ridership is down over 70% on the NY MTA, targeting tourists who come to your city to spend money for tickets to make up your financial shortfalls is not a good way to increase your ridership. I will make it a point to take alternate transportation in the future when I go to NYC in the future.

I recently visited NYC with my teen children with plans to visit sites across the city. There’s just no better way to get around than the subway. Sure, some stations are not so clean, and there can be some “interesting” characters on the trains, and there are times you may have relatively long waits, but you can’t beat the price and the overall convenience. It’s always a part of our NYC visits. If you’re a first-time visitor, don’t be scared. Do a little research, use common sense, and go for it.

One of the craziest things I’ve seen is the subway. If you’re not used to using it then It can be quite scary as it’s a fast pace to what I was used to in the UK. If you’re there for a few days it’s probably worth while buying a weekly subway ticket (if you have a few days left on it you can always donate it to a homeless person like I did). If you get stuck there are usually staff to ask and even other passengers have seen I was stuck and could advise me. The subway entertainment is great, never seen anything like it. They always bring a crowd around them. As anywhere you will find the odd weirdo or few on the subways but don’t isolate yourself and you’ll be ok.

We bought a 7 day Metrocard for $33 plus $1 new card fee and it was very useful. We bought it primarily so we could access the ferry to the Statue of Liberty, One World Tower, DUMBO, Wall Street and up to places like Central Park for the carriage ride, the Metropolitan Museum and the Flat Iron building. Very fast and efficient and the noise is all part of the experience. Easy to navigate and well signposted. If you or any of your party have walking difficulties/use a wheelchair, you should be aware that not all stations have disabled access, but those that do are clearly marked on the subway map. Lots of places are easy to access on foot but the subway was also helpful for getting around when it was minus 9 degrees outside.

Dirty, inefficient and the only real way to get around the city and this is from someone who traveled the various lines for years when we lived and worked up north. It is getting expensive but still less than a taxi. Don't even think about getting on one of the awful busses. I only gave it a second star because it is quick (most of the time) and less costly than other modes of transport in the city. Fogettabout it on weekends when services are rerouted and disrupted. You have no idea whee you are going and how to get there since no one works in the boots anymore. An antiquated system for use by way too many people it has no future but to get worse.

I have been in many underground transport systems across the world but I have never experienced anything as filthy as the New York system. The dirt of the actual trains, the seats, floors etc. The rubbish on platforms and lifts was disgusting and the constant smell of urine, faeces and cannabis was unbelievable. Lots of the stations are not disabled friendly so had have my wheelchair carried up and down flights of stairs. People were standing injecting and sharing needles openly. Given the number of stations that had NYPD presence, I was shocked by the open drug use. I would not recommend this as a means of travel if you have children with you as the sites we saw of people injecting, urinating etc was an eye opener.

There are 8 of us going to N Y in December ( 6 OAPs ) for4 days, we shall be using the air train then the subway to get to our hotel on 42 st, what are the best tickets to buy, we shall not be using the subway much. just the one trip down to battery park then back then returning to JFK, Thanks

Buy Pay Per Ride tickets which cost $1 plus $2.75 a ride and you can use a connecting train or bus for free as long as you don't go outside a turnstile. I would advise buying 1 each to save hassle of passing the Metrocard back at the turnstile coz sometimes you've got to swipe it twice and there's a small display that lets you know the balance on the card. Cards an be topped up at most stations using a debit or credit card, but it wouldn't accept my money card run by MasterCard,
Regarding asking for directions in the subway system, remember that most travellers are also tourists and in the same boat.

Bonjour,

Does each person have to have a pass? I am going to be in New York with two teens as well and wasn't sure.
Written 25 June 2019
I guess, if your teens are higher then 44 inches, there must be a metrocard for each of you. Magnetic ticket. You can choose to put some to e rather then value on metrocard. 5 day pass is a good choice

hola!
cuánto cuesta la metro card para adulto por 4 días?. voy a estar en julio. Muchas gracias!
Written 31 May 2019

Coming to NY next month but flying into Newark airport . Can I buy my 7 day metro pass to get from the airport to soho or can I only get my metro card once I’m in Manhattan
Written 8 November 2018
The subway diesn’t Go out to Newark Airport. There is a train to Penn Station or a bus to Port Authority (at 42nd St and 8th Avenue). When you get into Manhattan, buy our subway card. If you will be travelling more than 10 subway journeys in total, the 7 day card is the cheapest option.. You have to pay be card. If yiu’re Not a US resident it will still ask for your zip code. Just press the enter key at that stage and it will skip that field.
It works splendidly. Have fun
