This place is a good drive off the main route through the park. If you only have a day in the park there are many other vistas worth a visit. It's really just a big hole in the ground

This is out of the way with Scotty's Castle closed, but it is memorable. An explosive crater, it has a field of volcanic ask surrounding it with bare shrubs growing out of it. It is different from many of the other places to visit in Death Valley. No Grand Canyon, it is still amazing, though less so compared with Zabriskie... More

It was windy but an enjoyable walk. At fist glance it looks risky, but actually not a bad hike . Try the small one .

The view of the volcanic crater is different from other areas in the park. It is also cooler. Make sure to at least take the hiking trail to the small crater.

Get here before sunrise and watch the valley light up. The combination of shrubs and black sand makes for a photo event.

A drive to the less-visited north section of Death Valley is well worth it. The scenery along the way is starkly beautiful and the crater itself was fascinating. Although we had not intended to do so, we hiked all the way around the crater. It was cooler and windier here than in Furnace Creek, and that made for a pleasant... More

This is a HUGE crater and it's hard to believe it was created by water pressure. The size and scope are truly amazing.

This scene looks somewhat like the Haleakala Crater on Maui, but much smaller. It has that eerie feel to it. You can do a hike all the way around the rim of the main crater, with view to a couple of smaller craters next to it. It's an out of the way drive, but if you want to get away... More

Stopped on our way out to the racetrack. Morning is probably not the best time to photograph this amazing crater. It was rainy the day we visited, so I do not know if that added to the wind and cool temps, but you will definitely feel the "vortex" when nearing the crater. I made the climb to the top in... More
