Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts. Tours today include the cellblocks, solitary punishment cells, Al Capone’s Cell, and Death Row.

We really enjoyed our trip to Eastern State. We did the guided audio tour and it was fantastic. The guided tour lasted about an hour, but we spent at least another hour walking through other corridors and in the outside yard area. Highly recommend sticking...More

The Penitentiary was quite nice and a great addition to our trip. While it was a bit hot on our day there, it was well worth it! The audio tour was incredibly interesting and worth it. Great place to visit when in Philly.

We learned a lot through the audio tour, the displays and the docents. The site is perfect for people who like to take photos. We got there before 11am on a Wednesday and it was perfect. There were other small groups but with the size...More

This is not your typical historical museum. But we both really enjoyed it. It gives you a history of how society through the ages viewed criminals and how best to rehabilitate them. Plan to spend about 1 1/2-2 hours here.

Very exciting tour in the oldest American penitentiary. Of course it’s not the kind of place we go for fun. Some people think it’s depressing to go this type of attraction. But if you go there having in mind it has a historical purpose you’ll...More

A great place to check out a piece of history. The self guided tours are well done, though could maybe be updated a bit!

I never knew this place existed until a friend suggested it. The first true penitentiary gives an inside look at an actual jail. You get an auto tour so you can go at your own pace. The tour not only gives details of the prison...More

We walked here, and it wasn’t hard to find. We spent about 2.5hrs here. The audio is good and really explains stuff. I’m glad we got the chance to go see this.

It would be possible, but difficult as this is an old jail under restoration. You could probably get the idea of the place, but walkways are uneven, cells have narrow doors and a step over to enter. I agree with the other... More
