Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site was once the most famous and...

Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts. Tours today include the cellblocks, solitary punishment cells, Al Capone’s Cell, and Death Row.

This was on at top of our list for our trip. We were not disappointed. The space is amazing and extremely impressive. The best part was the walking audio tour. Here I must say, that I hate walking audible tours. However, this was so well done. The quality of the audio is excellent. In addition, and probably most important, the... More

I love history and prisons, so this location is the perfect combination for me. I enjoy the tours and love when Terror Behind the Walls is in town.

Very cool to see this beautiful historical place. Though there were criminals here, it is still part of American history and tries to communicate the issues of incrimination and poor ways of doing it.

Eastern State is by far on of the most amazing things one can do while in Philadelphia. The history alone is something that was enjoyable and you will get your money's worth. Walking around you felt as if you were transported back in time and it's something that you will NEVER forget. If you are in Philadelphia, you need to... More

ESP self guided tour is amazing. Expected to last about an hour, I was so hungry when we left almost 2 1/2 hours later! It was record setting high temperatures for February and my girlfriend was laughing at the people in down coats. Well those thick walls hold cold temperatures for a looong time! In the summer it is just... More

It's Eastern State Penitentiary. You have to visit at least once. It's a neat piece of history that you have to see to believe.

Eastern State Penitentiary is the nation's first penitentiary, a place where criminals were locked up to pay "penance" for their crime. The place is very old and run-down, and because it would have been too expensive to demolish, it was turned into a museum. When we went, we wore hardhats to wear "just in case." The prison is very dark... More

Had a great time going here. Went for the Halloween attraction and regular tour. Was alot of fun alot to learn on both. Two different ways to experience and both ways are great.

They have different level of tours and during Halloween,...it's a HUGE event. You've got to do it at LEAST once to know what you're not missing. Not for the squeamish. Actors heavily dressed up in latex will sneak up on you while waiting in line so bring your heart meds. There are also private tours that take you deeper into... More

The oldest penetentiary in the US, this is a fascinating place. A great place to explore. We took the audio tour, which is excellent. My wife has a lower tolerance for historical detail than I do, but she said the audio tour was just right. Bring a sweatshirt for cool days, as the stone buildings are chilly. This really is...
