We’ve been here before. And it's just as neat as before. A nice little stop on the way home. We parked and walked the half mile trail to the bottom of the arch. And it is a big arch. Largest in New Mexico. Pretty neat there up on the cliff side. It’s so surprising how steeply the cliffs rise up. Almost as if cut by a knife. A very big knife. And some of the rock formations defy understanding. It was a nice stop off.

La Ventana Arch is about a 28 mile drive south of Highway 40. At about the nine mile mark is a Ranger Station with tons of information about the area and a Ranger who was not only very informative but also a really nice person. Traveling about another 10 miles south you come to a beautiful scenic overlook. Then at the 28 mile mark you come to La Ventana Arch, there is ample parking and Rest Rooms. A short walk takes you to the Arch itself. We made the trip here in just over one and one half hours from Albuquerque and it was worth the trip. The scenery is incredible and not to be missed.

The path is a very easy, perhaps 150 yard walk from the parking lot, about 1/3 of which is actually paved. The rest is a good packed trail with a slight rise in elevation. A hat and sunscreen are both good ideas for this site, especially in the summer.
There are rattlesnakes and scorpions in the area, so be aware of your surroundings.
There is a parking lot, picnic tables, and pit toilet.
I was able to get good photographs in mid afternoon when we visited.

As a Native New Mexican, I say, as you're heading to La Ventana, on the right side of the highway, you'll see a Sign for the site. Rather than looking to your left, keep looking right. Drive up the hill, until you find a widening in the shoulder, Carefully turn around and drive back the way you came. You'll understand why, when you see the Arch the way it should be seen!

La Ventana is the second longest arch in NM (the longest is Snake Bridge in San Juan county). There is a highway turnoff that is about a 100 yard walk to the arch. The arch can also be seen by taking a hike on the "narrows rim trail." The hike is described in the book "60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Albuquerque." It's a beautiful hike on a mesa that is 7.8 miles round trip. The El Malpais visitor center, which is about 10 miles north of the arch on highway 117, has brochures describing the hike.

The arch is beautiful and a simple walk from the highway. Truly spectacular, but not quite as dramatic as some of the arches you may see in a park such as arches in Utah, as it is a single structure. Should definitely stop on your way down to lava falls.

Arch is viewable from the road, but do go and take the time to get a little closer. Easily accessible from a short walk from the parking area. Beautiful cactus and Pinion trees along the path.

It was hot and didn't really want to get out of car anymore. So when saw the sign we where like meh. Then I caught a glimpse of it and pulled the car around.
Totally aww inspiring. And well worth the price of admission. It's free by the way.

It was a quick stop at a beautiful site. If you're a photographer plan to go in the afternoon, I had difficulty getting a good shot in late morning.

Hi! What are the other 2 must see attraction near La Ventana? I'm at the beginning stages of trip planning and there is so much to learn about this area.

I would visit Lava Falls, further on the same road as La Ventana, and Ice Caves, about 20 miles west on I-40.

We are traveling in a large RV. is the arch accessible to RV travelers?

Thanks, I appreciate all the info!
We are in a large class A RV with a tow car which makes turning around a challenge.
We were able to drive in to the visitor center on 117 and the parking lot accommodated an easy loop turn around.
We then drove down to the arch and were also able to easily find parking and loop out of parking area with no difficulty.
We considered turning off onto Sandstone Bluff Road to check out the overlook, but opted not to because it requires going over a cattle crossing and we weren't sure about that.
My dad (the driver/RV owner) wasn't sure what to expect but it worked out fine and the arch were well worth the stop.
