Approaching the bluffs from the parking area, please be careful as they can be slippery. And what a view of the lava fields and surrounds! Spectacular!

The El malpais Conservation Area is a broad description of the area off Highway 117 and Route 44. Overall, the area is quite shockingly beautiful. But Beware of the poorly described geography. El malpais Conservation Area and El malpais National Monument are very broad descriptions...More

You can take a one mile hike in lava beds, view extinct cinder cones, see sandstone cliffs, and view a magnificent arch (New Mexico's 2nd largest) in this conservation area.

The drive alone is stunning, but there's more than that. Some great hiking. Walk along an incredible lava flow, see a natural arch (La Ventana) and some amazing sandstone.

Views of El Malpais lava flows surround the area. I found the South Narrows Picnic Sites along Hwy. 117 to be clean and well maintained.

This is a large area and correctly called El Malpais as this means Badlands in Spanish. The whole area has scattered basalt rock that goes back 100,000 plus years and well worth a visit.
