This site of Eleanor Roosevelt's cottage and the site of her former Val-Kill Industries is lovely, offering tours as well as trails in the surrounding woods. My time there left me with a strong sense of the simplicity and goodness that was Eleanor--nothing ostentatious about her or her cottage retreat. Next time I visit, I hope to hike the surrounding... Beautiful home and grounds where the First Lady grew up. Basically it is across the street from FDRs home. The rangers were very nice and tours are available to take.

We loved our guide. He showed a movie first and then we progressed to her cottage. It is small, but our guide was an impassioned young man who gave us a lot of information. We saw FDR's home and the Presidential Library the previous day and saved the little cottage for the second day of our weekend. It was beautiful... More

This humble place gives visitors a good picture of what was important to Eleanor. Too bad the NPS does not provide online or advance ticketing, but instead requires visitors to break up their day to stand in line at noon in the hope of buying one of the few available tickets. Really poor customer service.

This is a GREAT place to learn about Eleanor Roosevelt and the history of the Roosevelt family!!! My kids (ages 8 and 12) enjoyed walking the grounds, learning about the Roosevelt's and learning about the programs Eleanor Roosevelt put in place to teach skills to the unemployed during the Great Depression.

We had seen the Roosevelt home nearby, but wanted to see Eleanor's retreat, Valkill, which is a Coyle miles away. An hour or so is enough time to see the home. It starts in a nearby small building with a 15-20 minute movie. Then you move into the house, guided by a knowledgeable park ranger. Only portions of the first... More

Eleanor's home was a comfortable place to visit. You could feel the warmth of the place. Our tour guide did an exceptional job. He was a former school teacher and was both educational and entertaining.

We found out about this site on the National Park web site and decided we had to visit this, made reservations on line and got one of the last spots for the day we wanted - the tour group s are small and fill up fast - so reserve early. We found out a lot of interesting info about ER,... More

Eleanor's home at ValKill is much more down to earth than any of the other mansions seen in this area. The home is situation in a more secluded area versus the others along the Hudson. This, though, added to making this location and the home much more to our liking. The rooms have a number of original articles from her... More
