We've been visiting Fort Davis almost every fall for several decades now. Coming from the Austin area, we love being in the remote desert mountains enjoying the cool, fresh, dry air and the clear starry skies. This year we hiked the Sheep Pen Canyon trail across Highway 118 from the park entrance. Nice to experience something different, and we even... More

I and my children, ages 11 and 8, had a few hours to kill before heading to McDonald Observatory and wanted to go on a medium hike with great views. While this trail proved more challenging than what I was expecting, it was nothing the kids couldn't handle, though we kept having to stop just to take in the beauty... More

A lot of effort has been put into making this state park a hospitable destination. It is very attractive. Provisions in the nearby town of Fort Davis, TX, are limited. Be prepared. Be sure to visit the interpretive center for the history of the area and information about the park and wildlife.

Our family of four has tent camped several times at this park. As a family with 2, three and under, the hiking was perfect for us. We appreciated warm showers and clean toilets. The night skies were full of stars. The campsite offered scavenging wildlife at night.

We went with our 12 year old grandson just to hike. We went to the top of the mountain but did not find any trails that were sufficiently challenging. The next day we went to Chihuanuan Dessert Reserve and enjoyed that a lot more. We did not camp there, so no comments about camping

I camped here twice, passing through to Big Bend. While the park is nice and the people are great, it is a very noisy campground, especially if you are in the tent section. Not only is the road next to the camping area there was a constant roar from an extractor fan at the Lodge that kept me awake the... More

I stayed at Ft. Davis State Park as a camper with a weekend church men's group. The facilities re very nice; water at each campsite with a fire ring and picnic table. The canyon is scenic. The park rangers keep the facilities clean and fresh. They are quickly on top of unruly campers and keep things peaceful and relaxing. The... More

I've visited here since I was a young kid. This is my favorite Texas State Park. The park sits in a scenic valley in the Davis Mountains about 5 miles from the town of Fort Davis and the Fort Davis National Historic Camp sites run from primitive camping to full RV Hookups. I would highly recommend making your reservations ahead... More

Fantastic over look in the mountains. Numerous hiking trails. Appears to have many camping spots for tents and travel trailers. There are also a couple of nature viewing areas and an education center

We all enjoyed the scenic loop drive which goes by the McDonald Observatory, provides nice photo ops, stops for picnic lunch, and historic information. Be sure you take a scenic loop map with you so you do not miss any of the sights.

Thank PAT H
