Worth the trip, historic and informative
Jul 2021
This was a stop on the way home, and well worth the stop on our way. This is history that you want to have preserved as it attests to the building of our nation (good and bad) and shows how important this facility was as the nation was expanding westward to parts unknown. There's a little movie in the Visitors center and I'd make that the first stop. There's very nice restrooms around back in the basement...nice and cool on a hot day. There's lots of buildings that they were able to salvage and some that are just shells of what they used to be. There were period actors there as well, and I think they do re-enactments on a schedule that are neat too. It's pretty spread out so plan on some walking, but it's all neat to see a part of history frozen in time, and some of the history out on display to learn and interact with too. They did a good job of making sure the story of the indigenous people was told, as well as the settlers and the soldiers too. Just a short trip away you can see wagon ruts still today worn into ground and rocks near Guernsey, Wyoming.

Nicely preserved and important part of our history...
Aug 2021
Very interesting and important location in our history. Many original buildings and structures are still standing.
Does require some walking: but the property is easy to get around.
Worth a trip...

Unique Piece of Western History
Sep 2021
We visited the Fort and enjoyed the self-paced tour of the grounds and buildings. We also enjoyed a park ranger discussion on the history of the trading post and the impacts on the fort over the years. Staff was friendly and available to answer our questions.

Goo history lesson

The tour is self guided but there is a film to start. The map is not easy to follow but once you get turned correctly you can find things.

Immerse Yourself In the Frontier Outpost
Sep 2021
One of the premier frontier outposts of the 1800s. Imagine yourself stationed here in the military or a settler passing by heading west on one of the immigrant trails. This was also a scene for trade between native peoples and the white man. Also the fort served as a stop along the short lived Pony Express route. The exhibits provide a comprehensive view of life from many sets of eyes in this setting. Tour the different buildings from the enlisted quarters, to the married officer quarters, as well as. the house called "Bedlam" for unmarried officers. Bedlam is the oldest constructed house in Wyoming. From the parade ground view the stockade which houses some wagons and artillery pieces of the era. Also available for a visit is the sutler's store. Start and end your visit at the Visitor's Center which gift shop has a wide selection of books on western U.S. history. A MUST for the student of history and a well deserved rest stop for the weary traveler.

Western History

This was a great look back at history. Good 18 minute introduction video gave the forts history. The fort is spread out with the old structures and ruins along with the renovated areas. Little disappointed you had to peer into the rooms through plexiglass.

So much history!
Aug 2021
We could've easily spent hours to all day here. But, we were using this as a break during a long day of driving so we could only spend a couple. They have an interesting 18 minute movie in the visitor's center that gives the history of the location. There are several buildings to explore. They offer guided ranger tours. Their map is very helpful. Best of all....this is free! Would love to come back to explore the parts we had to miss.

Wonderful history
Aug 2021
The people who've restored and kept up this fort over the last decades deserve a real hand. It's so well done, from the displays to the rebuilt buildings to the period furniture.

Highly recommended for anyone, including children. The kids we saw appeared to be having a great time.

Great place to visit for the entire family.
Aug 2021 • Family
This is a great National Park to visit. It's very interactive and educational. They have done a wonderful job preserving a piece of history. There are many "ruins" yet also many maintained and furnished buildings to explore. The kids had a great time and even earned their ranger badges. Stop at the "bar" on the way out for a root beer or cream soda. They also have cannon firing demonstrations at certain times of the day/week.
