Simply enjoy it, don't have an agenda. Take in the Washington Monument, walk up it if you feel like it (~$7), the small parks around it, the trendy wine bars and brew crafts, the Walter's Art Museum (free) and appreciate the architecture.

This is a good area to walk around and enjoy the architecture and sites. Thankfully it hasn't been terribly damaged by the recent unrest, but maybe go soon, just to make sure your see it before anyone else gets their hands on it.

There used to be a book festival in October every year and that was my chance to wander around on walking tours; see all the turn of the century architecture. Good restaurants like the Helmand (Afghanistan).
