Bonaventure Cemetery was developed on the historically-significant site of Bonaventure Plantation. The peaceful setting rests on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah. The site was purchased for a private cemetery in 1846 and became a public cemetery in 1907. Citizens and others can still purchase interment rights in Bonaventure. This charming site has been a world famous tourist destination for more than 150 years due to the old tree-lined roadways, the many notable persons interred, the unique cemetery sculpture and architecture, and the folklore associated with the site and the people. The entrance to the cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road and is the largest of the municipal cemeteries containing nearly 100 acres. The cemetery is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. . The main office of the Department of Cemeteries is located in the Bonaventure Administrative Building at the entrance.

Call me crazy, but I absolutely fell in love with this place! The large, Spanish-moss covered oak trees give the cemetery it's unique atmosphere and the amount of headstones will keep you wondering with your camera for hours. It's filled with absolutely breathtaking sculptures and has plenty of cool history. I will definitely be going back!

Bonaventure is an old cemetery but ample people have been married there in more recent decades. The biggest draw of course if the grace site of Danny Hansford, but it is worth strolling other rows of dead so see some of the mostly wealthy and famous folks of Savannah in their final resting place. Not only was the body pf the... We visited the cemetery on the advice of a Charlestonian who visits often. Sorry we did not have the guided tour as it must be booked in advance online. We walked the park although you can drive parts of it. Very picturesque with huge trees, Spanish moss, and thousands of grave family plots and statuary.

We spent the afternoon exploring the cemetery and were surprised at how old some of the graves were. On some of the stones the numbers do not match up, which was very interesting. Legend has it that the soldiers were bored and scratched in different dates making one deceased person 400 years old at the time of death.

We did this as a side trip from Downtown Savannah to Tybee Island, but ended up spending several hours here. It is very peaceful .... like walking through a park. We were there in the winter and it was maybe a month after a hurricane had pasted through. So, there was still a bit of clean-up going on and still... More

With over 100 acres of property, you could literally spend the day walking around the cemetery. We actually came here twice on our trip.

We were visiting Savannah and decided to go to the one place that holds the southern histories of good and evil where the statuary of the bird girl was first discovered and photographed by photographer Leigh . It's where he now sleeps eternally. Where the movie of the same name was filmed under the tall cool oaks dressed in hanging... More

Visiting this cemetery was recommended by hotel staff. I was particularly interested since I had read Midnight in The Garden of Good and Evil. Very interesting tour.

It is a must see while in Savannah. This is widely considered one of the most beautiful cemetery in the world. I recently moved my 88 year old father here from up North. I drove him there, and he was awestruck with the history and beauty.
