About
Not your average "Dry" Museum, the American Prohibition Museum is the first and only museum in the United States dedicated to the history of Prohibition. While here, guests will travel back in time to the early 1900s, as anti-alcohol rallies swept the nation and the "booze problem" was pushed to the fore-front of American politics

    Great tour & guide
My husband & I took the guided tour of the museum. Our guide was very professional, kind & extremely knowledgeable. We learned a great deal about the prohibition & enjoyed the tour immensely! We ended the tour with a visit to the speak easy & enjoyed one of their unique cocktails. Definitely recommend!
We're so glad that you had a great time on one of our guided tours! Thank you for the review!

A good lesson on history in the early 20th century.
We are interested in history and this museum provided insight into the Prohibition era. Located on Julian St. you pay for admission at a stand just outside the entrance. The exhibits are located on the upper level which can be reached by stairs or an elevator. Beginning with the start of the dry movement in reaction to alcoholism affecting the country you move on to important figures involved in that movement. Also detailed are the economic effects on business and people who lost their jobs. All this lead to gangsters, moonshine and the repeal of the amendment to the constitution. The displays are very well done. There is a movie to view at the end of your tour which reviews much of what you have seen. A very worthy stop. Plus there is a gift shop next door with many items of interest.
Hi journalmytrips! We're so glad that you had a memorable time with us! Thank you so much for the great review!

    Do Stop Here!
My wife is not a history buff, and she HATES museums. All I need to say was "She loved it." Very informative displays. Fun facts! Really covered the build up to Prohibition, the Unintended consequences and the aftermath and end of Prohibition. The only issue I had was that some displays could have been more viewable.
Hi M6154AHmikem! We're so glad that we were able to impress you and that we were able to be your wife's kind of museum! Thank you for the review!

    Interesting Tour
We paid for the guided tour and I personally found it to be fun and interesting. I think I would have gotten bored just walking through and reading everything. We had a great tour guide, Emma, who gave us much more information than was printed up on the walls. Drinks were included in the Speakeasy after the tour and the daiquiri was delicious!
Hi Extraordinary667356! We're ecstatic to hear that Emma made your guided tour all the more memorable! Thank you so much for the review!

Great Experience at the American Prohibition Museum!
The American Prohibition Museum was def a great visit! It was easy to get to (right in the Savannah City Market), navigate and provided a terrific history of the Prohibition era. We took tons of pics as everything was so interesting. We did not have drinks, but there is a speakeasy at the end if you want to finish the tour there.
Hi Chris! We're so glad to hear that you had such a great time with us! Thank you so much for your review!

    Better than even expected
We learned so much about American society and the movement that led to prohibition as well as the unintended consequences and what led to the repeal of prohibition. Leaned that the federal income tax was started to balance out the revenue which was lost with passing prohibition! A great way to spend a couple hours in Savannah!
Hi Jody, thank you so much for your positive review! We're thrilled to hear that you had a great time learning about American society and the history of prohibition. We hope to see you again soon for another informative experience in Savannah!

A great museum well worth a visit. The exhibits are both entertaining and informative. And ending up in a speakeasy setting is fun. Great cocktail selection. Docents are friendly and knowledgeable about the Prohibition era.

Who knew all the facets of prohibition...
We heard about this museum on a Savannah historic walking tour, and decided to check it out. It's in the City Market area, and at first, we it thought might be a bit "cheesy." But to our surprise, the museum does a great job. It tells a very thorough account of prohibition, its many factions, and public policy implications. Overall, a good stop - very educational but entertaining at the same time!

It was just OK for me, although my husband enjoyed it more. Their claim to fame is that it's America's only Prohibition Museum. Their website says they have "more than 200 historic artifacts" & "captivating dioramas and hi-tech immersive displays." The front doors are located in the courtyard of City Market closest to Ellis Square, between Wild Wings Café and Rhen’s Nest Toy Shop. Parking can be challenging in City Market. We got metered parking. There are 2 parking garages nearby: Whitaker Street Parking Garage & Robinson Parking Garage. Online, they suggest it takes about an hour to go through the museum. I took off one star as I was annoyed with their questionable ticketing policy. When we arrived later in the afternoon in Feb., 2024, the person in front said it was $17.95 per person. When I told him, the cost had been listed online as $16.95 per adult, he said yes but that they sometimes just raised the price later on in the day when the museum got more crowded. WHAT??? I know this was just a dollar more a person, but it struck me as a sleezy business practice.

Hello fba5, We're sad to see we missed the mark with you, but we're so glad your husband had an enjoyable time with us. As there's no a lot of content included about what made your experience "just OK," we can't offer more than our apologies that you didn't feel your time well-spent. Hopefully, you found some other ventures around town that were right for both you AND your husband. As for our pricing, what you've described is called "dynamic pricing" and is not at all unique to our ticketing. You've likely encountered the practice for years on airlines, hotels, amusement parks, concerts, movie theaters, and more. Guests have the opportunity to access lower prices when they buy in advance and there are associated discounts for online purchases, also fairly common in many industries. We strive to be up front with how our pricing works which is why you can view a calendar online and see available dates and current pricing in real time. On the ground, you can talk about how to get the best bang for your buck with sales representatives. We understand being annoyed with the surprise, but we assure you, there's no sleaziness involved. Thank you for your comments.

We purchased tickets to the museum with drinks at the “Speakeasy”. It was highly recommended and we read the reviews, so we thought this would be one of our highlights. As soon as we entered, we were disappointed in that it seemed it was more for kids with the dummies than for adults. They had some interesting artifacts but quite frankly, we found it very boring and corny. If you are into reading and getting pics with dummies, this is for you.
PS the drinks were ok, but better to drink before you go

Wow, Donna. It seems we really missed the mark with you. As you already know from reading our reviews, the vast majority of our guests are instantly taken with the breadth of information and quality of artifacts inside. Most guests find the high-quality, professionally crafted, and historically costumed wax figures to add to their experience, no matter their age. We do agree with you: the American Prohibition Museum is absolutely for anybody who enjoys reading about this chapter of American history or being part of the history themselves through photo ops, both mainstays at other great museums around the world. If that's not how you like to engage with muesums, it seems we were, sadly, a bit doomed from the start. Hopefully, during your visit to Savannah, you managed to discover some experiences more tailored to your specific tastes. Thank you.

Fun and informative! Take your time and read all the plaques...very interesting and educational. You can see it in an hour, but I spent considerably longer, as the exhibits are all done extremely well with lots of details and stories.

Hello javalove4! We're so glad you spent so much time with us and walked away with so much knowledge. When guests ask us how long it takes, it's always a tough question as everybody is a little bit different as a museumgoer. We typically tell folks around an hour, knowing (and maybe hoping!) that they may dig even deeper into the material than we thought. Reviews like this make the amount of research and writing we've done feel worth it! Thank you!

We loved our experience with Miller (after the unruly bachelor party left lol!). We had fun mixing a few of our own drinks and having Miller mix some which we all got to taste. It was also nice to bring home the little recipe book. If you’re looking to do something different than the usual touristy things then I’d suggest taking this mixology class!

Hello Cindy! We love this review! Of course, a big part of it has to do with all of the praise and recommendation of our Cocktail Class. However, the part that warms us the most is your support for Miller and his expertise. When things get rowdy, the instructor's job gets harder as they strive to mitigate the effects on other guests. It always means a lot when our guests stick by our Instructor and remain determined to have a great time in spite of any disruptions. Clearly, Miller threaded the needle with y'all and we were sure to share your review with him. Thank you!

A small, packed full museum with wonderful displays, guides in period costumes, excellent video, life like wax figures, photos and news clippings from the era, etc. We took a guided tour which included a mixed drink in the speakeasy at the end of the tour. The guide was a young, energetic woman, but she was sometimes hard to hear. The museum is small and packed full of displays, with minimal circulation space. Not ideal for small groups trying to listen to a guide while others, who purchased self guided tours are also trying to look at the displays.

Our #1 suggestion is to Expand! Get more space. The topic and history of the period is very engaging. The impact on society lives with us today in so many ways! ( Take the guided tour to learn about taxes, prison expansion, FBI, NASCAR, etc.

Our #2=suggestion is to somehow rearrange the tour so people can first view the film and then tour the museum.

The Speakeasy with drinks served in glasses from the period was fun! But again, the circulation was very tight.

We came on a somewhat slow day, I can’t imagine what it is like during busy crowded times. Please expand and enlarge this charming museum.

This museum offers two tours; guided or self-guided. We chose the self-guided so as not to wait another hour for the next tour. Based on other reviews I did expect a bit more than we got. We were told before entering that there would be docents throughout the museum to answer questions and interact with us. Unfortunately, this didn't happen so we walked through reading all of the information and looking at the displays and signs which were well done. We did pass a guided tour as we walked through that, quite frankly, didn't seem all that interesting either. All she was doing was giving the information that we read verbally. Maybe we went on an off day?

We paid for a ticket that included a choice of period drinks at the end which were good, and the bartender was dressed the part and had a natural long, curly mustache. He was great!

In short, if you're a history buff and like museums, this museum is worth a visit, just don't expect docents to interact with you.

Nice little museum. Explore prohibition and how it affected the country. Bootleggers and their high powered cars led to NASCAR. The wax figures are very life like.
