Trail Breaker Kennel is one of Alaska's legendary kennels where the legacy lives on. Established in 1974, by the late Susan Butcher, a four time Iditarod champion, and her husband David Monson, a Yukon Quest champion, the kennel opens it's doors in the summer and winter to show visitors what it is like to be a musher in the interior of Alaska.

Starting in 1993, Trail Breaker Kennel became a favorite stop on the Riverboat Discovery tour in Fairbanks, where visitors are treated to a dog mushing demonstration twice daily. David, his two daughters Tekla and Chisana, and their dedicated staff allow visitors to take a peek into what dog mushing in Alaska is all about.

Trail Breaker Kennel also offers a "Backstage Pass Tour" for those interested in seeing these champion Alaskan Huskies up close. Offered daily from 3:30pm to 5:00pm (by reservation), visitors experience a guided walking tour of the kennel, where they have the opportunity to ask questions and pet the adorable puppies.

Our tour group of 40 enjoyed an "on property" tour and presentation given by a young, female musher from the 2015 Iditarod. Saw the dogs up close, cuddled the 2 week old puppies and had a really nice private lunch. Very informative.

Excellent insight into the life of the sled dogs from being raised, trained and in competition. The guide Laura was very open and answered all question honestly. We were luck as we were in a group of 4 only.. Would recommend the Backstage Pass to anyone.

We went on the trail breaker kennel tour and it was a once in a lifetime experience! There was just myself and my son on the tour, so we got to ask a lot of questions and learned so much from Laura, who had actually competed in the Ididterod. We also got to see sled dog puppies-what could be better?

This was an amazing tour. Very personable, accommodating and knowledgeable staff. We learned about the preparation involved in completing the Iditarod first hand from Lauren. We met her team of dogs who ran and completed the 2015 race. She could not have been more informative and knowledgable. We were able to handle the puppies, tour the facility and met the... More

We had a demonstration by this kennel group of the operation, training and riding of the dogs and sleds. We view it from a boat off the river shore in Fairbanks. Loud speakers were set up so we could hear the presentation. They also demonstrated how they mushed the dogs around s circular track. They also outlined how they were... More

This tour was amazingly informative and interesting. Gave me a new awareness! Jessie's passion for the Iditarod was contagious. Those Alaskan Huskies look like your family pet, but their strength and endurance for the race will make your jaw drop! Each dog can pull 7 times it's own weight. The big bonus was that I got to hold a puppy!

I visited the Trail Breaker Kennels for my first dog sledding experience. The staff at Golden Heart Tours was amazing. We never felt like this was a "tourist attraction" we had the opportunity to interact with the kennel staff and get an up close and personal look into the world of dog mushing. The sled ride was exhilarating and the... More

This was my first time ever dog sledding and Golden Heart Dog Tours was amazing! Everyone was professional, the admin. building was clean and Cali and Laura were so friendly. They let us see the dogs and told us a bit about them. We went on the 7mile Jumble Ice run which was a blast. They took us over some... More
