Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Spectacular Views along the 89A. Start at either end, Jacob Lake or the Navajo Bridge. This is a very popular off road area (with high clearance try BLM Road 1065), with some of the best scenic hikes in the West. Some hikes will need a permit; so, if interested, check this out first. You can also sign up with a tour company that does off road and hiking adventures. There are information centers at Jacob Lake, Kanab, and Navajo Bridge. Along the main route you'll see sweeping views of the landscape. There are also several lodges, rest stops as well as the Cave Dwellers House. The Lee's Ferry area is the most tourist friendly. There's a fee to enter but most visitors already have some sort of a federal pass. This is a major put-in spot for river trips down the Colorado. It's also an end-point for the shorter trips from the Glen Canyon dam. There are several trails and historical spots here, one trail up a mountain ridge and a spur off of it that follows the river a bit upstream. But there are some washouts on the latter, though nothing non-negotiable or dangerous. Just keep your eyes sharp for the continuation of the trail over the impacted gully areas. And if it's hot, there's really no shade. The Lee's Ferry site also contains a balanced rock landscape, but there are also a couple of other of these sites outside the fee area along the drive. Some active adventures like to hike on the Cathedral Wash trail. On the leg toward the river you might have to negotiate several small drop downs. For a relaxing respite, pull into the Paria Beach area and watch the rapids that are being formed from the debris flow into the Colorado from the Paria. Good place to picnic. But camping is on the other side of the road.

Camped at Lee's Ferry Campground, right beside these magnificent cliffs and thought they were so worth the 4 hour drive from Valley of Fire, another awesome site. The Cliff Dwellings were so unique and the cliffs themselves such tantalizing shades of reds, tans, and oranges. Take the extra hour and drive to Antelope Canyon near Page, and book a required Navajo tour through the short canyon. I have never seen anything quite so exquisite. The Southwest is definitely my favorite part of the US for natural beauty, but get out of the car and see it!

We chose Route 89A rather than 89 to travel south from Page to Flagstaff. The Vermillion Cliffs are a marvel with the colors shifting as we twisted and turned on the drive. The road is well maintained and easy to drive. This route is well worth the additional time.

This is a great drive, with ample opportunities to stop for photos. The drive is especially stunning in the early morning or late afternoon/evening light. I have driven through this area a number of times, and each time I enjoy the cliffs and the ever changing colors depending on the light.

The drive along Highway 89A was an experience like none other. We were on our way to Page, AZ for the first time and took this route. What a surprise. The landscape is like none other. Just beautiful the red rocks and swirls throughout. It's quite a road to be on but take your time and enjoy the beauty that beholds you. The formations just make you wonder - how! We will be back to explore this more.

Large National Monument that most of us will only see from the road.
There's no visitor center. There's lots of hiking. The hiking is supposed to be out of this world good. You have to have a permit for hikes like Paria Canyon & Coyote Butte.
Just don't hurt yourself. There's not a lot of help around here.

Simply fantastic scenery. You can walk over Navajo bridge which is over the Colorado River - it's the very beginning of the Grand Canyon. Saw 5-6 Turkey Vultures under the bridge. Lees Ferry is just a short distance further down the road. Also, gorgeous - don't miss it.

We chose this route because it looked interesting on Google Maps. We were not disappointed. Pretty scenery. Remote. A few small towns along the way.
Utah and the surrounding area in adjacent states are known for "red rock." This one is different than most. No crowds; hardly anyone else at all. Not as iconic as most Utah parks, but still worth the drive in nearby northern Arizona.

My brother and I were heading to Utah. Driving along 89a was superb! The surrounding land along this road is spectacular!
At one point, there were some really cool, giant boulders on the side of the road. One looked like the petrified skull of a dinosaur (I know it wasn't, but it was fun imagining it!)

Is the Vermilion Cliffs open to the public? I am not sure what is open or closed nowadays due to COVID. We plan to go there in November and is this just something you drive by (scenic drive) or can you go hiking? Thanks!

Yes, it's free. I don't know about hiking trails. We hiked along the gorgeous shoreline.

I would driving from Zion to page. Is it better if I stopover in Vermillion? Is everything accessible by car and short hikes?
Written 27 August 2020
I would go to the ranger station in Kanab and they can direct you to all these. They have hikes where you can pick up a permit for that day as well. They are also changing the permits for the Wave and making it easier to get these. The cnange has not gone into place yet but may be by the time you arrive.
Also, if there is any bad weather and washed out roads, they can give you this information. This entire area requires a 4 wheel drive vehicle. ( All wheel is not good enough), They have a list of local guides who can take you into this area that all have 4 wheel drive.

How far is Vermillion Cliffs monument from Page?
Written 16 May 2019
A little less than 70 miles. It should take just over one hour if you do not stop.

There appears to be no limitation to what you can do out here other than you may have to hop a barbed wire fence. It is quite isolated and no official supervision that I could see. There are a couple motels as stated above. Surprised they get enough business to survive as they are off the main roads. They appeared pretty nice driving by.

Is this off of 89 or 89A? Google maps shows a different location than TripAdvisor.

Do we need a special permit or pass to visit the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument?
Written 18 February 2019
There are many trails that do not require permits and several that do.
You can apply for permits online or go into the BLM office in Kanab. Sometimes especially in the winter, they don't even have lotteries for some of the trails and you can just purchase a permit.
Please be aware that 4 wheel drive vehicles are usually required on the roads especially if there is any kind of snow or rain.

Hi,
My family will visit PAGE, AZ in coming Dec 24th and 25th. We will take an antelope tour in the morning of 24th. Please recommend where should we go in the rest of the time. TIA

A tour of the dam is interesting. Also the Horseshoe Bend Park is worth the short hike.

Did you get a lottery ticket to walk through or can we see many beautiful sights without winning the lottery?
Written 8 November 2018
The tour we took (White Pockets) was spectacular and did not require a permit. There are only a few that require permits and we could not plan far enough in advance to even apply for one. There are many magnificent options from Kanab (in both Vermillion Cliffs NM and Grand Staircase of the Escalante NM) that also do not require permits.
