There is a 1.5 mike hike up a trail before you get to the entrance of the falls. You are required to hike through a cold stream / small river to get into the tight canyon hosting the falls. Once inside, there might be several...More

We came here with our two dogs for a hike and maybe see the falls. It's a bumpy four mile ride up but the views make it worthwhile alone. You can see the sand dunes and mountains at a new level. The hike to the...More

After a short and not too challenging hike, you will need to actually finish the last part of this adventure by actually entering the stream formed by the waterfall. We were there late season so the water levels were fairly low but it is still...More

The falls themselves are reasonably impressive, but it’s more about the journey. After a short, slightly steep, trail, you have to walk up the - pretty cold – creek to actually see the falls. It was good fun and pretty easy when we were there...More

After a 3 mile dirt road drive, you hike about 1/4 mile to the edge of the stream that leads to the falls. Prepare to get your feet wet. As you make your way into the cave that contains the falls, you will be walking...More

TERRIBLE road that goes to the falls. Then the quarter mile "trail" to the falls is not easy to do, either.

The road is BAD, and a sign warns you a head of time, but it doesn't matter because the falls and the walk to it are worth it. There is a parking area and restrooms, and a nice view of the Great Sand Dunes NP....More

This was my third visit to Zapata Falls. While the road was poor before, it seemed even worse this visit. It is very rocky, but fortunately quite wide so you can negotiate the better parts. There is plenty of parking at the top. The trail...More

Hard to believe this beautiful stream and falls is very near the Great Sand Dunes NP, especially on a hot day! The rocky road up to the parking area is very rough as others have said, and you will need to plan at least 30...More

So to start out with..... the road leading to the trail head is horrible.... but the falls and the view are so worth it! There is a look out where you can see the dunes and the hike to the falls wasn't all that bad!...More

I went in March and the waterfall inside was nearly all frozen. Once inside the cave, the ice is very slippery. I'm assuming as summer progresses, the ice thins out.
