Often imitated, two decades later, still in a class of our own. A Walk in the Woods is the oldest Guide Service in the Smokies. We are the recipient of the coveted REI Top Guide Award...the only hiking guide service to have ever received that award East of the Rockies as well as the Travel Channel Top choice award. Since 1998, A Walk in the Wood has been your doorway to the Smokies. For almost 2 decades, we have taken over 100,000 people into the beautiful National Park on a variety of excursions from driving tours, easy gentle guided walks for families and novices, challenging adventures, to guided backpacking trips on the famous AT and more. We are the only guide service in the region where all of our guides are professionally trained naturalists, historians, storytellers and all around educators. Our guides are passionate about the natural world and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Jewel of the Parks. We can also plan your adventure, rent your gear, shuttle you and help you safely explore the world of wild edibles and medicines, tasty mushrooms, tracking, birding, salamanders and more.

We went in the three hour waterfall hike with Jen as our guide and it was amazing. She was very informative and the landscape was of course beautiful. We had children ages 5-11 on the hike. The base was perfect for all ages and we would definitely recommend this tour group and the hike. The great part is that we... More

Spent a very enjoyable time with Sam on Friday, Nov.11 when my we took the driving tour of Cade's Cove. She was so interesting, informative, and easy to listen to. Loved the little extra tidbits of information she included in the tour. Time was well spent. Would do it again

We had an enjoyable walk with our guide Tilly. She made the hike interesting by providing various facts and tips about the trail. The pace of the walk was comfortable and she provided us walking sticks. We took photos at different spots and had a snack mid way. We had a wonderful experience and highly recommend Walk in the Woods.... More

This is the second year in a row using a walk in the woods! Jenny was great. She paced us well and knew so much about the local flora and fauna. History as well. We did the waterfall hike. It was definitely on the moderate to strenuous side but great 5 hours in nature. Had a wonderful bag lunch which... More

I was part of a group of 10 high school students and 2 teachers that were privileged enough to have spent 5 days and 4 nights in Pisgah National Forest with Michael and Jaimie Matzko. Not only were they incredibly knowledgeable about the environment, teaching us things about the different plant and animal species, their patience and enthusiasm was amazing.... More

Plus, history dating back to Cherokee tribes to present and learned so, so much more. Jen is incredible and knowledgeable. Today was a truly memorable experience. I'm hooked... More

My husband and I booked two walks during our trip and both were excellent. The guides were extremely knowledgeable about the Park and what to look for. We got to see incredible waterfalls and learn about the different plants, berries and creatures that we got to see. We went on the 2.5 hour walks and they went by so fast... More
