About
The Tooro Botanical Garden is characterized by a gently undulating landscape with an altitude of 1500m (4900ft) above sea level as the highest elevation. It has an annual rainfall of 1400mm and an average temperature of 22 degrees Celsius all year round. TBG operates one of the largest indigenous tree nurseries in Uganda. The species-diverse forest arboretum and restoration plots have more than 116 native tree species and other countless plant species. There are three restoration plots set up with the aim of conserving endangered and highly utilized species, propagating protocols (research), and a nursery to supply indigenous species. According to TBG, as a result of restoration, tree species increased from 17 in 2005 to more than 116, while bird species increased from 34 to more than 113 in 2019

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Beautiful gardens run by the community with a professional plant and tree nursery. Also a lot of medical plants and wonderful birds. Our guide Gerry was very kind, knows a lot about plants and birds and is a real ambassador of this beautiful place. The honey and other gifts they sell are recommended.

Tooro Botanical gardens were established with the aim of conserving the tree species that might be facing extinction especially in the western Uganda as well as in the mountain slopes of the Rwenzoris

Had a great time visiting the botanical gardens. Garden might be a somewhat misleading description, it is more of a forest/plantation with a large nursery. If you enter via the north entrance you'll access a car park and the information office (which also sells dried herbs and crafts). A guided tour lasts around 2 hours and the knowledgable guide will tell you all about the different plants and wildlife. Wear suitable footwear (can be muddy) and you'll have a lovely time.

We usually try to visit botanical gardens whenever in a large town/city. The Tooro gardens are quite untamed and not manicured compared to others. But if you expect an informal layout (it's a bit like a big nursery come allotment come mini wilderness,) and if you are interested in plants it's a really great place to visit.
A highlight for us was early morning bird-watching. You can book with a guide at 6:30/7am. We saw a beautiful pair of vereaux owls, Ross' turaco, paradise fly-catcher, ludher's bush shrike, brown-throated wattle eye..... to name but a few.
The office sells herbs and other remedies prepared onsite from the plants.

Nothing happens, and there is not a lot to explain although the guides were really nice and helpful. Would only recommend if you have to waste time in Fort Portal.

I had a nice time walking through the garden - watching trees, herbs, huge banana trees and beautiful birds. Guides provided interesting informations.

Went with no real expectations and came away surprisingly pleased after a 2 hour guided walk of the park. We were shown around by a very knowledgeable guide who explained to us about all the different plants and birdlife. A beautiful way to spend a couple of hours in Fort Portal.
