Lots of interesting things to see and learn. Guided tours. I went with a small group of grade school age boys and their parents.

Independence and the surrounding area are so full of interesting places to see connected to the Westward Expansion. Stopped here and after visiting their exhibits, picked up a free auto tour guidebook on nearby places in western Missouri and northeastern Kansas to see areas along the Santa Fe and Oregon/California Trails. Found a book in their gift shop for our... More

The museum presents the story of westward expansion, much of which started in western MO. Several of the important trails ran through Independence. The museum is fully wheelchair accessible. The exhibits attempt to tell the story from several perspectives. No matter who you were the trips West were difficult!

Independence, Missouri is one of the jumping off points for the trails to Oregon, California and Santa Fe. This museum is a great way to learn about the hardships of travel before the railroad put an end to wagon trains. Told through videos, pictures and journal entries of travelers, you will leave amazed at the strength and courage of those... More

This is definitely a museum worth visiting. The staff and volunteers are so welcoming, informative, and helpful. I visited the museum for the first time with a group of kids. I will go back on my own where I can move around at a more leisurely pace and take in more of the history of Independence and the Frontier Trails.... More

The museum tell the story of the Santa Fe, California, and Oregon Trails. My son could get extra credit for a high school history class if he visited this museum. Glad he wanted the credit. We enjoyed the exhibits and the film Spent over an hours there and will take out of town visitors there in the future.

Excellent historical perspective on type of people, length trails to the west were used prior to advent of railroad system, biographic information, documents, pictures, and artifacts. Well displayed in a space that you can "consume" in an hour or so to gain a much better perspective of the times, people, and events of not only the Oregon Trail, but those... More

Lots of neat artifacts from frontier times. Very friendly staff. Be sure and see the movie. The wagon ride was closed due to cold weather so be aware that it may not be openIHG you go in the winter.

The museum adequately focuses on the jumping off point of four trails. It discusses the routes and the excess (thought necessary) loads starting out. The railway depot caught my interest. I visited in 2008 on a rainy day ... which made for good photos without glare.

We found this museum very interesting, Very informative intro film and lots of displays. We did not know Independence Mo was the starting point for many of the frontier trails. Our ancestors really had it tough heading out West and had lots of courage to build a better life for themselves. We learned a lot and glad we visited and... More
