Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My brother wanted to visit a beach marginally more off the beaten track, and Pemuteran turned out to be a good shout. We loved the rustic feel of the place, the marvellous volcanic sand and the stunning hills surrounding it. There are a few hotels on the beach itself serving good food and drinks, and there are lots of opportunities for snorkelling, diving and more. Although it’s not a long beach, if you’re happy to climb over some rocks it’s long enough for a leisurely 1 to 1.5 hour walk and the same back. We actually arranged a trek through Bali Barat National Park along with snorkelling off of Menjangan Island whilst we were here using the details off of another trip advisor site, and although it was a touch pricey by Bali standards was super easy to arrange and was a fabulous day out.
In terms of the weather, we went in the low season which has risks of rain and monsoon. Although the weather forecasts threatened thunderstorms, it turned out to be a mixture of sunny and overcast at times but always warm and pleasant enough to be sunbathing in our swim wear.
With all this going for it, why am I only giving it three stars? Well, that’s because of the single use plastic lining the beach. It was very noticeable on the first and second days we were here, but on the third day, due to the change in sea current I think, there was a very high volume of trash in the sea and on the beach. I feel sorry for Bali, as this trash is washing up from other parts of Indonesian, and this trash is primarily created by Indonesians. It includes noodle packets, sweet packets, drink cups, polystyrene, and a lot of plastic bags. Although a lot of people were snorkelling off the beach and I did that too, for me when it was bad it was just too much. The marine life is wonderful, but I just couldn’t enjoy it whilst seeing the trash in the water, not to mention how sad it made me feel. By Bali standards there may be less trash than elsewhere in the water than elsewhere, but it was enough to spoil the experience for me.
Overall, I would recommend it as the trash was not all that bad on the first two days and there is more of it in low season, but it’s something every visitor needs to be conscious of.

The beach at Pemuteran is a large bay. it is a serene sandy beach, with volcanic (grey) sand. The sea is calm and free of strong currents and waves - perfect for swimming and snorkelling. It has rocks at either end of the bay, which are exposed at low tide (beware of the sea urchins). It is unique in that it has coral reefs within 50m of the shore. The reefs are protected no-fishing zones, and full of friendly curious colourful fish. It is also home to the Biorock project, the largest reef restoration in the world.
There are a couple of beach warungs but generally there are only a few people on the beach no hawkers or massage huts unlike beaches in the south of Bali. There is also very little rubbish in the water or on the beach, which makes a rarity for swimming and walking on the beach.

stayed in Pemuteran for two nights three week ago,and one afternoon visited here for sunset, but that day no good sunset.actually it is the second time i came here, the first time almost ten years ago. Pemuteran beach is always quiet, not crowded.there are many cafes and restaurants along the beach, you can relax here, the sand is black colour. you can walk along the beach, and see some firshermen doing their job. there are some cute dogs on the beach.you can even ride a horse here,i think it is an activity provided by the hotel nearby.recommend Pemuteran beach to those who stay here.

I just returned from 4 days in Pemuteran. The beach is beautiful and the town is small and welcoming. It is a 3+ hours drive from Ubud, and well worth the peace, beauty, tranquility, and interaction with locals, a priceless journey. You won't want to leave.

We had Tawan (+62 853-3360-1576) to bring us around Pemuteran, drive and guide us. The sea and beach around Labuhan Lalang, was great. Tawan is flexible, outgoing, responsible, and safe-driving man. See you soon mate. From Singapore.

This place is not what is described in the travel literature that is floating around the Internet. The beaches are not nice at all, garbage everywhere! Very very very, noisy due to the tremendous amount of road traffic and the mosques blaring for hours on end Forget about a quiet restful place, this area of Bali is not that! Even the exclusive resorts are not isolated from this environmental assault of the senses. And the chicken farms behind the " resort " we are staying at, sunrise rosters! Even the picture displayed above is not accurate, I am in this place writing this now after being here for the past 4 days and have not seen anything that remotely resembles the photo!
It is very very hot and dry there. The sun turns your skin into toast in no time. I can not wait to travel the grueling 4+ hours of treacherous roads to get out of this area. It is not worth the expenditure of time to go to Pemuteran.
I came here for the best diving in Bali (?). It's not here. Amed is much better and far less expensive and accessible.
Over all I don't recommend this place at all!
Sorry to say this but it's almost 1030 PM and the local religious sounds and road noises are still ringing very loudly throughout this supposed quiet place. No sleep again tonight!

Loved this little village and the resort was amazing, great food and snorkelling as well as one salt water and one sweet water pool, both nice and big!

We really fall in love with this place. The beach is black sand but really savage and peaceful. You can dive anywhere and enjoy many fish, squid, coral etc... they have a coral sanctuary. There are also many small villages with local, people going finishing everyday.
The sunset is astonishing.
From the beach you can also see the mount Inés with the green vegetation and really looks wild and natural.
You have many small restaurants all over the place where you can taste fantastic local food, specially fish. Price is cheap. You can also fine many dive centers and spas and convenience stores.
We highly recommend this place if you enjoy nature and love the sea. Good to escape from daily routine and far from touristic places.

As a coral reef ecologist I have wanted to visit Pemuteran and its artificial reefs for a number of years. The drive to Pemuteran through the interior of Bali past the beautiful lakes and attractions around Budegul was beautiful and fun. Pemuteran itself is a welcome step down of gears from Southern Bali and lived up to our expectations. The pace is slow, the scenery magnificent and the stewardship partnership to protect and restore the marine resources between the tourism operators and local communities is a source of hope for the future.
We splashed out and stayed at one of the up market resorts (Amertha Villas) and enjoyed the beach front position, beautiful mature gardens and breathtaking backdrop. The villas are palatial but best of all the resort (and several others) provide easy guided access to the reef, artificial reef structures and beyond.
As a place to relax, unwind and enjoy Bali's beautiful marine environment Pemuteran is a real treat that can be enjoyed by all ages.

Don't be put off by the black sand, it’s the setting that makes this beach so unique. Backed by high hills which are stunning and low rise hotels of varying sizes (but no high rise, ugly buildings). This is a working beach so you’ll see the fisherman bringing in their days catch and everyone getting on with their usual working day. I really liked this beach. Yes, it’s a long journey to get to but its relaxed atmosphere felt like the Bali of old. Well worth the trip up.

Hi, I have booked 4 nights accommodation at Taman Sari for July 2016. We love, peace and quiet and swimming in the sea and snorkelling. We love authentic charming Bali. We have a couple of nights booked in Seminyak when we first arrive and we know the area well, and then 2 nights in Munduk on our way to Pemuteran. I was just wondering whether 4 nights is too long or should we head back to Seminyak for one night before our flight or 2 nights?
