Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Mr. Made Ada is an internationally renowned woodcarver artist famous for his Garuda (fire dragon) carvings. The fire dragon is the national symbol of Indonesia. Mr. Ada comes from a long line of wood carvers and from a wood carving village (Tegalalang). He has presented his works to several heads of state including U.S. Presidents Reagan, Clinton and Obama.

We walked to his museum and were met by Made Ada himself. He warmly invited us to walk through his museum and workshop as well as to go upstairs to see a restaurant and theater where he presents exhibitions of Balinese dancing several times a month most frequently on Saturdays. We were warmly invited and encouraged to attend although our schedule didn't allow it.

Further, Mr. Ada took us on a private tour of his workshop where we were able to observe the detailed carving done on some of the statues under development. Mr. Ada showed us through the museum including showing us many pieces made by his grandfather and his father.

Many of his works are large, anywhere from perhaps 2 meters to some which are 4 meters tall to one which was likely 8 meters tall. In addition he does 'doors' and 'windows' which are door and window sized flat pieces of bas relief carving. His pieces are both 'washed' with a light staining/preservative as well as some are painted.

Mr. Ada was extremely generous with his time. He is a special creative genius and a genuine artist and benefactor to his community.

I wish I could post photos of Mr. Made Ada, his works and his museum!

My wife and I were also met by Maestro I Made Ada who eagerly greeted us and gave us a tour of his exquisite gallery of wood carved master pieces. I cannot fathom the patience and discipline that goes in to carving any one of the pieces on display. A absolute marvel.

We just happened upon the extraordinary I Made Ada Gallery and I’m so glad we stopped. The work is amazing and I Made Ada himself is a joy to meet. He is one of Bali’s great woodcarvers. The gallery is a don’t-miss if you’re in the area. Good to stop by while driving from Tagalalang Rice Terrace to Pura Tirta Empul.

We had a wonderful time visiting the studio. It boasts an impressive collection and the owners take the time to share with you their passion for the art. We bought a few amazing pieces that we will cherish for a long time. A truly amazing experience. Ada boast an impressive clientele list (world leaders) and when you see his pieces, you realize why.

As this is not on top on the internet to-do-lists, I almost missed it. But a good friend told me to go and I am so glad I did.
Authentic and amasing are the words that come into mind, when I have to describe the artistry in their wood carvings.
Located close to the rice terrases in Tegallalang, which gives a good combination for a short trip and different experiences.

This village between Ubud and the Batur volcano is the traditional location of the carvers of Garuda statues. Made Ada is the master carver and businessman whose family has organized the village over 3 generations to create these great Balinese artifacts.

I have purchased 3 of his statues for myself and family since 2012 and they are made from proper sustainable teak, not the weaker mahogany or jackfruit wood that never lasts and al the tourists buy wrongly.

He and his family are very welcoming, don't hassle you to buy and it costs nothing to visit as it is a gallery as well as museum.

Additionally his son Nyoman Ada does 1 day long carving classes which are good fun.

I would completely agree with the previous reviewer. This is my second trip. About thirty years I bought a garuda in Yogya and was trying to find another as it was lost on divorce. My children loved it perched above the stairs protecting them. Mr. Ada's son soon found me a replacement and had it painted for me. The whole workshop is fascinating with sculptures ranging from huge to baggage sized. I understand that Mr Ada has provided sculptures for prestigious projects around the Far East and met many world leaders. Get directions from Ubud and set off. I came on push bike which is challenging and it is easy to hire a motorbike. There are several ancient temples around which can be visited on the same trip and the countryside is beautiful. May I correct the previous reviewer? Garuda is a bird like deity. It is carrier of the Hindu god Vishnu hence the name of the Indonesian national airline.
