- Morgan4 contributionsValue for moneyThe factory tour itself cost 500LKR and for that you get to walk around the factory and see all the different machines and different stages of the tea making process. Our tour Gide spoke very good English and took the time to answer questions. The tour maybe lasted around 20-30mins. You can then sit in the cafe and taste one of the teas for free. There is also a gift shop. The views are really nice.Visited January 2020Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 February 2020
- milespointstravelkomRedlands, California1,336 contributionsDamro factory is much better. If you are going to visit just one, go there. If you have time, can see bothNuwara Eliya is a hill-station and we were not going to leave without seeing at least a couple of tea gardens and tea factories. Two of the most famous tea gardens in this town are the Pedro Tea Factory and Damro Labookellie Tea Factory. We drove to the Pedro Tea Factory. This is NOT a working factory and therefore we decided to skip the factory tour and instead walked part of the tea garden.Visited December 2019Written 29 February 2020
- Nitin TulsianNoida, India120 contributionsWorth a visitFactory tour with the guide was very interesting and informative. They charge a nominal fee of LKR250 for adults and my kids were allowed without a charge. They run the factory during the night shift only so couldn't see most machines working but despite that one would get a good sense of how tea is produced. We also walk down the tea bushes but didn't see any plucking activity in that part unfortunately. I would recommend this place to people who have not been to a tea factory before.Visited January 2020Travelled with familyWritten 9 January 2020

Pedro Tea Factory is a reasonably small facility, but located on their Lovers Leap tea estate, just minutes from Nuwara Eliya township, so reasonably easy to visit. The factory tour takes about 20 minutes and costs 500 LKR per person. Most of the machinery in the factory was sitting idle, but our guide said that the processing was done at night due to the different humidity and drying qualities. A number of reviewers have said how informative their tour was, but that wasn't the case with ours. Our tour guide was quite unengaged. The tour felt rushed, she parroted a few facts quickly and quietly in each room of the factory, and was very difficult to hear or understand. I don't think anyone on our tour came away with much more knowledge on tea production than they went in with. You weren't permitted to take photos in rooms with grading equipment. The reception area of the tours was modern, with a balcony overlooking a small tea planting. There were a few women plucking leaves below the balcony, but they appeared to be doing it primarily as a photo opportunity for tour participants. There is also a walking track to Lovers Leap Waterfall from the factory site.

The visit at Pedro Estate was so nice. We could take a walk through the beautiful garden, taste delicious black tea and got a very interesting tour through the factory.

We had a four here with tea tasting at the end. It’s an eye opener to what the ladies experience during their working hours in the factory especially in the drying room which is extremely hot!
Tour guide was brilliant and very informative. Tea tasted so good had to buy some!

This tour is quite dull.
It only took about 10 minutes, and no photos are allowed. If it was a free tour, it would be fine, but I'm not sure it's worth paying for.
We saw the tea factory at the Heritance Tea Factory hotel- it was free, and much better.

Nice tea estate and one of the oldest. Tour of the factory is not free. There are other 2 tea factories in Nuwara Eliya , which I believe are better in terms of service.
Staff seemed to be least interested in selling the products, which is unusual for Sri Lanka.

We intended to go on a factory tour, but they told us the factory wasn’t running at the moment. We decided to do a tea tasting instead. 6 cups of tea were put in front of us without any explanation.. I then asked someone for an explanation, she just told me which cup was which tea, no further explanation.

This is where we purchase our tea from every time we visit Nuwara Eliya. We have visited Pedro tea factory over 5 times now. This was our 7 month old's first time though. The tea is superb and the view of the tea plantations from the viewing deck is a nice experience. We did experience the factory tour once which was very informative. Highly recommended for a nice experience if you enjoy Ceylon Tea.

Impressive to see all the tea plantations in Nuwara eliya, which are very big. We had a very good tour guide who showed us the factory and explained the process of making tea very clear. Also very impressive to see under which circumstances the employees live.

Lovely old tea factory in the hills. we were given a tour of the factory and shown how the leaves are processed. At the end we got to taste 2 kinds of tea. The tea is brewed for exactly 5 minutes.

I only ever leave reviews when things are really good, or very bad and this was very VERY BAD.
We had wanted to do the factory tour and were told on our arrival that we weren’t able to because the factory wasn’t open for visitors that day (oddly). We were told that the only two activities we could do where the two (more expensive at 1100 Rs pp) “experiences” of Tea tasting or Tea picking; we opted for the tea tasting. We said we understood that the factory was closed for tours but asked if it would be possible to pop our heads round to see the inside of the factory? The woman said yes. So we sat down for our tea tasting, and after 10 minutes a tray of tea was plonked in front of us, a different woman pointed and said some teas were strong and others weren’t, and then departed(!) There was no explanation about the variations of tea on the tray, how they are grown, or what they were even! Nothing. Nada. We were just left to our tray of random teas. It was an absolute joke. We tried to find someone to ask questions but got minimal information and no actual explanation on the process.
We then said asked if we could have a quick look round the door at the factory, and the woman in charge said “yes that’s fine, that’ll be Rs.350 each” i.e. the cost of the tour which we had initially asked for and were told that we couldn’t do!! I queried why we were told merely 15 minutes earlier that we couldn’t do the tour of the tea factory, at which point the woman basically lied to us and claimed she had included it as an option!! She was basically scoffing at us as she spoke implying that all 3 of us had misunderstood. The Sri Lankan driver who had driven us there and was waiting and had heard the whole thing was as shocked as we were at the audacity of this woman. (And won’t be recommending anyone go there again).
This is an absolute waste of time please avoid and don’t make the same mistake we did by going to this shambles of a factory.

I visited the tea factory in April and on the day of the visit we saw the equipment in action in the factory. this was interesting and I agree it was worth a visit. Unfortunately the equipment is very noisy and we couldn't hear the tour guide explaining things! Having said that I would recommend a visit, which includes a chance to drink some of the product.

I would say don’t risk after late afternoon. They use the workers to do the tours and they start shifts I think after that.
We like to visit ur tea factory with children in December 23rd.so pls let me know how to contact someone

I wonder what the working conditions are like, yorkshire tea has produced a list of where they source their teas and this one was on the (extensive) list.. In connection with a petition that was campaigning for fair trade - rather than 'fairly traded' that sainsburys has opted for.

Most of the production activity takes place at night so it is difficult to say. The picking of the tea however is conducted manually. If I remember correctly, the factory does claim to have a stake in the social well-being of the community.

Hello,
It will depend on how you travel and the area you travel.
Most of the good tea factoris in Hill country near Nuwaraeliya.
If you travel by private car go to the Glenloch or Labiokele. Those are on the way from kandy to Nuwaraeliya.if you visit in South only go to Hadungoda.
If you come only Kandy are it's Kadugannawa tea factory.
All the factories you can visit 9.00am to 4.30.pm
If you want totravel by private car in Sri Lanka try Sri Lanka Wide Tours who have very good review s

We didn't make a booking to visit. When you show up, they will let you know when is the next available tour.
Morning or early afternoon is best. The staff seems to be present between 10 AM and 3 PM.
