Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Thoroughly enjoyed this tour. The docent was knowledgeable and entertaining. The actors provided insight into different aspects of the Vietnam era. Kudos to everyone involved who made this event happen.

The weekend before the service, I drove the grounds to get a feel of the layout to photograph the event for the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. It has the same feel as Mount Olivet Cemetery in Janesville, WI, and the groundskeepers keep the grounds clean. It's old and established cemetery that has a lot of history to it, which includes past governors and prominent members of Madison.

Camp Randall goes back to the Civil War where it served as a training ground for Union soldiers. Forest Hill is a few blocks away where captured Confederate soldiers were laid to rest when doctors of both sides tried to save their lives.

I was never aware of the Northernmost Confederate Cemetery . I was disappointed to see they had removed the larger memorial but ad the headstones weren't desecrated'

It's weird to be writing a review of the cemetery. Just a disclaimer, mine doesn't have anything to do with the quality of service here for the departed. I speak purely of the historic value of this cemetery. Basically, walking the cemetery is like walking back through Madison's history - most of the famous people, all shaker and movers so to speak, are buried here or across the road at Resurrection Cemetery. In fact, if you know your deceased before you go there, or after, check out the book "A Biographical Guide to Forest Hill Cemetery Madison Wisconsin: The Ordinary and Famous Women and Men Who Shaped Madison and the World". Cemetery has historic structures, some controversy to it (Confederate Rest - part of the cemetery where the dead Confederate prisoners of war were buried - the ones that were held at Camp Randall), and also Native American Mounds.

I stop there now and then to honor people I have known. If you go to the Jewish part I recommend gathering a bag of stones. You can't find any there. The tradition is to place a stone on a grave. When I walk around there I recognize monuments to parents of old friends and faculty who I admire and feel I need to leave a stone. The whole place is peaceful. Across Speedway is the Catholic part which also has a special charm. I like wandering around cemeteries and let my mind drift. Sometimes I see a familiar name and do some reflecting.

Confederate Rest is contained within Forest Hill Cemetery and is right next to a similar plot for Union soldiers. It is the northernmost Confederate cemetery in the US.

It's hard to think that so many young men from the south were brought to Camp Randall in Madison WI and died without ever being able to go home. They were came up from Missouri after being captured, many of them so ill or injured that they could not recover. 140 of them passed away in Madison, most from Alabama and a few from other southern states. They were buried in Forest Hill and for a few years, their plot was left to be overgrown and illkempt until Alice Waterman, a transplanted Southerner, took on the care of "Her Boys" until her own death. She is buried with them now and the City of Madison maintains the site.

While visiting Forest Hill Cemetery and Confederate Rest, you might find exploring the rest of the large cemetery to be interesting. There are many local historic figures buried there and it is also the site of several Indian mounds.

The cemetery hosts historical reenactments in the fall that are educational and engaging. The paths and plots are well taken care of and have great depth of Madison history all around.

I never miss a visit to this cemetery when I'm in town. A few of my former teachers from my time as a student at UW are buried here and it's always such a thoughtful time to walk these beautiful, landscaped areas and remember some very special people. Dignitaries from Madison's history and several soldiers from past wars are here as well.

It is a beautiful and historic cemetery. Beautiful monuments. Many of the cities founders were laid to rest here.
