Top ways to experience Audubon Park
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Uptown / Carrollton
Very much their own self sufficient unit within the greater metro area, Uptown and Carrollton tone down the urban edge with a friendly attitude and collegiate feel. Home to Tulane and Loyola Universities, all the students living in the area ensure that Uptown and Carrollton stay youthful, cosmopolitan and vibrantly fun. Two of the liveliest thoroughfares for nightlife and socializing (and yes of course more of the city’s outstandingly good food and live music) are Oak Street and Maple Street. For a truly wild time, the expansive acreage of Audubon Park, with its zoo, golf course, and actual patches of swampy wetlands, means peace and quiet are never too far away.

We got the Charles Street streetcar form the French Quarter which is cheap and takes through the lovely garden district up to the Audubon Park. The park is large, you can play golf, there are running & cycling tracks, beautiful lakes with wildlife and nice flower gardens. You can also walk through this park and visit the Audubon Zoo which is a fantastic place to visit while you are in the area.

Lions, and Tigers, and Bears, oh my!
What makes Audubon unique is the reverence for the moss draped oaks, and original buildings with early 1900’s architecture. Don’t forget the wandering rambles from venue to venue.
The park was laid out by landscaping genius Frederick Law Olmsted. He designed the US Capital grounds, New York’s Central Park and the iconic Biltmore mansion in Asheville, NC.
The only drawback, and I am a New Orleans native so I can offer some authentic thoughts, is that Audubon has gotten lazy. The place looks tired. Wood railing needs refurbishments. Many viewing venues did not have an animal occupant. Worse still, was the dearth of directional signage. Finally, the ticket ladies were friendly but missed the basics. No mention of the train/tram feature, important to Seniors and those with small kids.

Fabulous walk around this park today, right up to the river and back, around 5 miles in all including an ‘off piste’ to the golf club cafe for refreshments. Amazing Spanish Oaks everywhere, and the walk alongside the Mississippi was amazing with wildlife including lizards, herons, huge butterflies and dragonflies the size of pigeons. Thought I saw an alligator but was told it was a piece of driftwood. Still not convinced. A great few hours, but take plenty of water, it was 32 degrees and there’s not a lot of shade!

Whilst the kids were shopping Magazine Street, she and I took out cameras over to the park. It was refreshing to see so many people out on a Wednesday afternoon enjoying the beautiful spring weather. I haven’t seen so many people roller skating since the eighties! Of course, there were lots of dogs. We enjoyed rambling around, taking photos of the birds and trees until the kids joined us.

We rented bikes and rode out here from the CBD. Great, easy ride along St. Charles Avenue (it was Thanksgiving so not that busy). And when you get here, it's a beautiful, peaceful place to cycle. The Olmstead brothers of Central Park laid out this park and did a masterful job.

Very very safe in the Day Time. Closes at maybe Dusk. Hundreds and Hundreds of people are walking, biking or dog walking. 1.5 mile? paved trail and plenty of benches/seating. This location is worth 1-2 hours. Golf Course attached. RR was not clean the time I was there and small RestRooms.

The streetcar will bring you here to uptown's Aududon Park right across the street from Loyola University. It so beautiful and peaceful and you can take the path for walking, biking, skating or running and it only about 3 miles or so. Worth the Trip!

It was a cool day & all the animals were out. My 4 year old nephew enjoyed the elephants & the turtles :). We enjoyed the play ground & even climbed a tree (you're allowed up to a certain point). They took a couple of photos of all 12 of us and super imposed some fun backdrops. We bought them as we left the park. Wish we had more time to stay but we had a wedding to go to :)
ENJOY!!!

lovely place to stop by outside of the mardi gras party. You can schedule horse back lessons, see the tree of life, the labyrinth is more of a mediation area, the zoo is great. there is also a huge tea room on the premises. not open all the time.

We may have carry on luggage with us during the day of our visit. Are the lockers large enough to accommodate a small suitcase?
Written 31 March 2018
I would leave the luggage at the desk or with your Air BnB Host as the lockers are small and folks in New Orleans, whether Host or Desk Staff will surly help.

It has horse stables. Are there horses for rent to go for a ride? Are there trails to ride on?

Hi Mama Kaci! Beignets are on some Uptown restaurant menus and there are food trucks in Uptown. The location of the food trucks is TBD each day in New Orleans. Hope you enjoy your time here!

Of course they are open, it is a public park. Audubon Park is a city park located in the Uptown neighborhood. The park is approximately six miles west of the city center. It is bordered on one side by the Mississippi River and on the other by St. Charles Avenue, directly across from Tulane University and Loyola University. You can easily get there by either car or by taking the St Charles streetcar. Audubon Park houses the city zoo, a golf course and some of the prettiest live oak trees in the city.
