If you like walking, there is lots to see on Magazine that isn't crowded with tourists so you get a more local vibe with a variety of food and shopping options.

We lived right next to magazine street and it's a nice little area with some cool stores around and some good food places. Nothing really special, but if you're in the neighborhood you might as well check it out.

My wife and I walked from our hotel in the French Quarter down Magazine street through the Garden District. Great stores to shop in while you are out for a walk.

I went over Christmas time with my parents and brother, we felt safe everywhere we ventured. We walked or took the street car everywhere from our air bnb in the garden district to magazine and into bourbon street.
