Nice neighborhood

I'm no expert, but as 60-somethings, we felt very safe walking in the day time. Charming architecture.

If you want to get a sense of what the French Quarter must have been like before becoming the international destination for people who want to binge-drink during the day and pee on the street at night, this is definitely a must see. Our second favorite neighborhood in the city after Uptown.

We saw the district & Frenchman's St thru a guided walking tour, great to see the architecture and history. The district is going thru a revival & restoration which is great to see the old unrestored beside those taking on a new life.

If you go into Faubourg Marigny from Frenchmen Street you see some wonderful parts of the city with stunning houses - some being sold by Southeby's. Some good eating places too.

The area is certainly up and coming with new bars and great restaurants. One may feel the neighborhood is a bit seedy, but it is safe. There is alot of restoration going on and you can tell this will be the NEW place to be.

The other reviews of FM speak to all that is so right on with this side of NOLA. From the best music to the best BBQ (see The Joint reviews) all set amidst architecture that matched the late October 2016 weather...oh so Caribbean. Just perfect. You gotta go here! Highly recommend you take the Free Tours By Foot 2 hour... More

This area is kind of where the locals go at night type of area. It is right next to the French Quarter and has a lot of nightlife and shopping, just not quite as fast as the FQ. Check it out!

When you've had it with the unruly crowds in the Quarter and you think you'' just die if you have to step over one more body on the sidewalk (or worse), then head a few blocks over to FM (and it's kid sister, Bywater). Here you will find truly fun bars, excellent music venues, small galleries, delicious coffee shops, and... More

Block after block of traditional wooden houses, with little traffic or noise and even less pretension. I stayed at an Airbnb shotgun house on Dauphine Street and thoroughly enjoyed being in this area. Drinks and cheap eats can be had at Mimi's nearby.

Staying in French Quarter

Neighbourhood Profile
French Quarter
A small and teeming network of laissez-faire living lounged out on the balmy banks of the Mighty Mississippi, the French Quarter has long been a port of call for folks in search of a good time and a great story. Perpetually inebriated Bourbon Street runs across its midriff like a strand of cheap ribbon tied around an otherwise rather pretty and impressively well-kept vintage dress. Throughout the rest of the Quarter, brightly colored Victorian homes and businesses, famously done up with wrought-iron features, provide a distinct and immediately recognizable backdrop for all varieties of fun. At any given moment in this historic riverside setting, some of America’s finest meals are being cooked, most potent cocktails are being mixed, and most engaging music is being performed.
