We visited a number of the bars on Frenchmen Street over the 4 evenings of our trip. We really enjoyed the music in the small intimate setting. We particularly enjoyed the Mason bar.

Hit several clubs, no admission, no drink minimum. Terrific bands in small venues. The best was French Maison, bought DVDs of the ban.

Great place to visit when in NOLA, wonderful market with a wide variety of things to buy, prices are nice and not to expensive. I got maybe 8 pairs of custom earrings for $20.00 and I have gotten a ton of compliments.

A short walk to Frenchman Street is well worth the effort. Restaurants and music is perfect for the quirky taste of the real New Orleans, away from the hustle and craziness of Bourbon street. A must for the traveler.

Frenchman street is a street of tiny bars and bistros bursting with colorful people, good music , great food and a good time! It is where the locals go for the best time!

Skip Bourbon Street and walk beyond the French Quarter and you'll hit Frenchman Street. This was by far the best place that we came across for live jazz music. Don't miss The Spotted Cat and Apple Barrel (which I heard was good for food too). From Thurs-Sun, there's a cool arts market and if you're really lucky you might even... More

Want local music and a thriving art and food scene? Head to Frenchman. If you are walking, take Decatur Street and cross at the fire station on Esplanade Avenue. Any other route walking is very dangerous. Seriously. Don't do it.

Frenchman used to be a great spot. Lots of clubs - you can go from one to the other trying out music you like. There are still lots of nice clubs with great music. Problem - too many tourists. Tourists have found it. So if you want to go where the locals go - don't go here. I won't tell... More

I didn't get a chance to go into any places because they were all packed on a sunday night. All the bars were so small and the ones that were empty didnt have any music. Maybe i went on the wrong night...

Frenchmen was the "it" destination for Bourbon-weary hipsters probably 6 or 7 years ago, but its gone more mainstream as New Orleans continues to gentrify in the Marigny. Its still a great destination to wander in and out of clubs for great music. The Spotted Cat is stil my favorite. Love the art maket and occasional fire dancer as well.... More

Staying in Faubourg Marigny & Bywater

Neighbourhood Profile
Faubourg Marigny & Bywater
Nestled between the French Quarter and the Ninth Ward, the Faubourg Marigny & Bywater environs are largely residential. Of course, folks around here love to go out and have a good time as much as they do anywhere in NOLA. And if out-of-towners want to join in the festivities, well then so much the better! Home to some of the most revered live music venues in New Orleans, an eclectic gaggle of gourmand dining destinations, and a come-as-you-are vibe that’s as infectious as it is alluring, this is real deal New Orleans oozing with southern hospitality and the promise of a most epic night out. For endless opportunities to boogie, to admire row upon row of lovingly restored homes, and to escape the fray of the more touristic parts of town (but still live it up in grand style) head to Faubourg Marigny & Bywater.
