The area
Address
Neighbourhood: French Quarter
A small and teeming network of laissez-faire living lounged out on the balmy banks of the Mighty Mississippi, the French Quarter has long been a port of call for folks in search of a good time and a great story. Perpetually inebriated Bourbon Street runs across its midriff like a strand of cheap ribbon tied around an otherwise rather pretty and impressively well-kept vintage dress. Throughout the rest of the Quarter, brightly colored Victorian homes and businesses, famously done up with wrought-iron features, provide a distinct and immediately recognizable backdrop for all varieties of fun. At any given moment in this historic riverside setting, some of America’s finest meals are being cooked, most potent cocktails are being mixed, and most engaging music is being performed.

Best New Orleans Jazz in Bourbon Street
Oh my, what a jazz delight! Had been struggling to find true New Orleans Jazz, and here it is. Small, friendly, fun venue, great service, good prices, and then there is the music. Richard ‘Piano’ Scott has a voice which is a combination of Louis Armstrong and Nat king Cole. Catie Rodgers was amazing on trumpet as well as vocals. If you are in New Orleans and you want to hear New Orleans Jazz this is a must, right on Bourbon Street.

Great music, small venue, but very friendly
First time here and basically just walked in from the street. We sat at the bar and had a drink while watching the band play for about 45 minutes (they were already playing when we walked in). It is a small venue, but we found it very entertaining, with great music, great interaction with the band, who the crowd sits very close to the stage/platform in a 180. They pass the hat at the end of the show (since you walk in for free) and we gladly tipped. Great experience.

    Don't Miss This Venue
Can not say enough good things about this place. Great music, fun atmosphere, reasonably priced drinks, no cover charge, and SO much energy in the room. There isn't a lot of seating so I recommend getting there about 6 pm or so and staying for a couple of hours. (no food is available or allowed inside, just fyi) If you do go later, just stand for a bit and people do leave and you can snag a seat. This is a MUST if you love old traditional jazz music.

    Great music, ok drinks
The jazz trio was excellent and very fun in an old-timey way. Just what we were looking for. The atmosphere was cool and interesting, too. The expensive ($28 for two) drinks were hastily prepared by an overworked bartender and served in plastic cups. Figured that’s how they pay the band, but then the band still did a hard pitch for tips.

The lovely hostess at the door is a very classy longtime warm greeter. The jazz bands are always phenomenal. The patrons are friendly + awesome. Cost of alcoholic beverages is excessive. The wait staff + bartenders are extremely rude. Gratuity is automatically added to some patrons' bills + not others. Discrimationg but unsure of determining factor. We purchased 2 drinks + the service was horrendous yet an automatic 18% gratuity was added to our bill. However, the couple seated behind us did not have auto gratuity added to their bill of 2 drinks. I do not recommend this establishment. Ownership changed, for the worst, several years ago. I am a native + Fritzel's was a much better venue under previous ownership

Like the one other good, authentic jazz club on Bourbon, the core group of musicians at Frtzel's seems to have changed since the last time I was here. I miss the banjo, that gave it a different, honky tonk character. But the music is still authentic Dixieland Jazz, and the narrow, relatively small room gives it an intimate, old timey feel. This group isn't as playful as the group I remember from many previous visits, who always joked around between songs.

I love this place! It's traditional Jazz music and it starts as early as 12:30 in the afternoon. Less crowded then; in the evening they pack 'em in and the music is a bit more raucous. It is fun no matter what and the musicians are top notch. There is a one to two drink minimum but no cover charge during the day (sometimes there is at night). Just go and enjoy it!

We had heard this place as it’s billed as the oldest operating jazz club in New Orleans. Heard it was hard to get into so we made a point of stopping by late afternoon rather than evening. We were so glad we did. It was an awesome experience with a very cool vibe, great set up for the musicians and seating as well as fantastic drinks. The musicians were wonderful. Most enjoyable!

Great place to hear live old time Dixie jazz. The ensemble with drum, horn, bass and piano played
Classic dixieland music. Drinks were reasonable minimum one drink or cover charge. The band had CD's for sale and of course a tip bucket. Only complaint is with COVID patrons were pretty close without masks. We are vaccinated so not worried. Hearing the music was worth being close.

Loved this place so much the first time, I made sure I made time to come back one last time before leaving the city. Music venue and local jazz artists change from day to day. The music was always great, the ambience is quite tranquil and is a nice change of scenery fro the madness one can find on Bourbon st. Definitely recommend!

Stumbled upon this jewel as we walked through a very drunken Bourbon Street. The music was great, local musicians were amazing to listen to, and drinks were served well and reasonably priced. If you can find a spot to sit and chill - can’t ask for more.

We dropped in on a Thursday night for the first set of John Saavedra and his band. He was perhaps one of the best performers I've seen on Bourbon and Frenchmen. Amazing dexterity on the guitar and his band had awesome solos from the standup base to the drums to the sax/piano. For a small club, the set up at Fritzel's is really good and you'll have a great view of the stage even by the bar. We only found out about the speakeasy on the second floor but didn't have time to return and check out the Vampire Bar. You'll need the password to get in though. Very highly recommended and the best place to be on Bourbon.
