Buffalo round up

Saw many on horses. Long lines of buffalo crossing the road. Many stop and take pictures along side the road. Beautiful scenery.

We saw a bunch of bison both before we started driving the loop and as we drove the loop. We also saw lots of other wildlife as well. It was fantastic! The donkeys were really something. They blocked the road and cars were pulled off all over. Some of the donkeys will stick their head in open windows, which startled... More

You can drive this road and see nothing - and then look in your rear view mirror and do a quick U turn. The speed limit is low and you as drive along awestruck by what you see you will be pestered by the lovely 'beggin burros' .Escaped donkeys that now 'ambush' you by blocking the road and then put... This particular area provides a great view of the different landscapes you can see while in Custer State Park. Part of it is heavily wooded, other is rolling grassy hills. Saw 30+deer, 1 bison (it was off season). So glad I went on this loop!

This is a lazy winding road, a place to take your time and enjoy the sights. The wild life is abundant and with each turn you will see nature at its best. The sights are a photographers dream.

15-20 miles of lovely driving, within Custer State Park. A couple of bison herds, winter grazing along the road and frequently licking salt from the road surface were a special treat for our 4 year old grandson

We were fortunate enough to see many types of wildlife. We drove the loop one evening at dusk and came upon a herd of elk. There were probably 70-100 elk with several bull elk. We were in search of the buffalo herd. That evening we did not see them. The next morning we drove the loop again. We drove off... More

A very scenic drive with lots of animals to view. Our first siting was a large herd of Antelope, followed by lots of deer, prairie dogs, rabbits, bison, and even a coyote. The terrain was very varied and we really enjoyed cruising this loop

During our visit to South Dakota and all the major tourist traps I found this little jem. Custer State Park was not crowded and I found out you can bring carrots to feed the wandering Wild Donkeys. IT was a highlight for my kiddos feeding those donkeys. Got so close up one of my pictures only has an eyeball of... More

We love the wildlife loop! One thing we always make sure to do is stop at one of the visitors centers and ask about where recent burro and bison sightings have been. This helps us plan our route around the park and increases the number of animals we see. We also bring crackers or vegetables so that we can attract... More
