We saw buffalos and their babies, burros, prairie dogs, swallows ... it made this drive very interesting wondering what we were going to see next! A nice relaxing (and cooler than Rapid City!) way to spend a Saturday in South Dakota.

The view on this loop is amazing. Antelope, buffalo, prairie dogs, wild donkey and other animals in their natural habitat can be seen just roaming around sometimes just feet from your vehicle. A nature lovers dream!

We started on our drive around the wildlife loop and kept thinking how little there was to see, but then after a few minutes it was nothing short of amazing. The begging burros and the buffalo are everywhere. Fantastic photo opportunities to see these amazing...More

This was the best part of the trip. Buffalo/bison, mules, antelope etc. all along the wildlife loop. Able to feed the mules and get great pics. If you are in a hurry this is not the loop for you. Animals walk and cross the road...More

I have to admit that we generally are not "drivers by." We like to hike, bike, raft, horseback ride, etc. to see the sights. So, I was not especially excited to drive the Wildlife Loop. It was a nice low-energy way to end one evening...More

We went through June 13, 2017 late day. There was very mild traffic through the area. The animals were amazing. We saw a very large single Bison along the roadside that we took great photos of. We did stop at an area with Burrows but...More

We saw antelope, elk, deer, and best of all, a wild buffalo herd crossing the road! The park is spectacular on every level! I highly recommend!

We only had one day in the park so we chose to drive this loop. There is a fire tower lookout area along the drive at the NW end of the loop. This is a must do! The road up a scary (steep, one lane,...More

We drove the loop around 6 PM and saw tons of animals. I would imagine it is just best to avoid the hottest part of the day.

The loop is part of route 16a. You can stop at any of the lodges and get a map/specific directions. I would recommend signing up for the tour since they take you off the beaten track a couple of times.

A couple of other points - the animals along the road are wild - they may not be afraid of your car, but that doesn't mean you should try walking up to them, especially the bison. The prairie dog towns attract rattlesnakes... More
