Cool Tunnels and Bridges

This is a great scenic drive, with cool tunnels and bridges - and if you are heading toward Rushmore, you'll be treated to some great views as you come around some bends.

A great drive with great views. Love the little tunnels and pigtail bridges. It's a beautiful drive on a nice day. We had wonderful weather in February, so had no trouble with snow, but I imagine you would have to be careful in bad weather. A must see if you're in the area.

This is a wonderful, scenic drive. Although the road narrows at the tunnels, with care and patience its wonders unfold continually.

Rode this on my Harley while attending the Sturgis rally. Was one of the highlights of the trip.... What a great country..

I am glad I had done a bit of research before our road trip, and insisted we take this route to Mount Rushmore. It was easy as we came from the south, but no matter what direction you come from, it would be worth a detour to approach via the Iron Mountain Road. Such a lovely drive through the Custer... More

Fantastic views but requires cautious driving particularly the tunnel that only fits one car at a time. Well worth the white knuckles for the scenery.

no for the faint hearted ,, drive slow and enjoy the scenery the tunnel in the picture is barely wide enough for a pickup with camper mirrors folded in much wildlife to be seen there also

Do try to navigate to Mt Rushmore via this route. Take our word for it. Take a deep breath - it's narrow two lane, but the first time that you drive through a one-lane tunnel cut that gives you a tunnel-framed view of Mt Rushmore, you'll get it. Special treat - drive it at night when the Mt is illuminated.

Someone recommended this drive to us. It was a scenic drive and we happened upon a herd of Mule Deer and Pronghorns. You will want to drive north towards Mt Rushmore so that when you drive through the tunnels you are faced with a wonderful view.
