Chronicled as early as 924 AD this two-spired parish church with wooden Gothic statuary is Sankt Johann's main attraction. Following the great fire of 1855, which reduced both the town and the church to rubble, the Pongau Cathedral, as it is known today, was rebuilt from the ground up (1855-1861). A number of Late-Gothic figures can be seen among the church's impressive Neo-Gothic altars. The church's imposing site over the Salzach Valley and its majestic interior mark the building as a tour de force of Austrian church architecture.

We' ve done special stop in this city thanks to this dominant. Parish church surrounded by the modern buildings above the city invites you to visit him. Simply neogothic architecture from outside as well as inside. Free entry. Interesting daily light inside. So pure and simply that i' ve been disappointed. Interesting old self-closing mechanism on the entry doors. The... More

We stayed in Sankt Johann for a week so we stopped in to explore the cathedral. The Pongauer Dom is so easy to find as it juts above the town. Pick up a mass schedule inside the main door. Not a huge tourist stop but a great place for some quiet reflection.

Very pretty but quite small. some history is printed on boards outside which give you an insight to the church. Central to the village. Be aware that there is very little information in any language other than German so unless you find someone present, you will need a translation tool to help you.

In such small town there is great, cathedral church. This was surprising for us. Worth to see. Free parking (for 1 hour) is just vis a vis the church.

Always visit the town's local church. It is the pillar and most central aspect of a community in this part of the world. Christianity was the center of power, you can tell by the architecture, time and resources invested.

Attended Mass here on Saturday evening and it was a very pleasant service despite the language difference. The organist played very well. A very nice church.

I agree with some of these reviews who marked the "Dom" as time wasting target of a vacation point. Moreover, there is nothing special to see in the centre of Sankt Johann. We are accommodated in near Großarl, which is much more nett village (by my humble meaning) with everyday program for guests and a lot of opportunities to experience... More

It says everywhere that you absolutely need to see this "dom".... I was disappointed. From the outside, it looks great and when you are inside, there is no soul. It is just dull. For me anyway. Not worth the bother.

This church is a rebuild following the 19th C fire which destroyed the old one. Upon entering the church spirits soar. It is a joy to be in a church without a lot of 'clutter'.
