Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

After arriving at the top in a very beautiful and tiring paved path,, we discovered that you get there with the road to the top. There was sometimes fog and sometimes the sun but spectacular. The monument is very damaged. We learned from locals that in August there is a festival with projections on it and it seems to see a spaceship. Search YouTube for videos. All to raise funds for the restoration. It would be nice if at least with Guide you could also visit the interior of which there is little left judging by what 'you can see from a hole in the door.

Excellent trip to the tops by car. Fantastic views and impressive construction. Easy to get right forward. Not just for wheelchairs. Blowers on top so bring extra clothes. A little bad way up there so calculate more time than the GPS says. Drive carefully.

This monument was built to remember us the glory battle for our liberty from Ottoman yoke. Each Bulgarian should visit at least once-in-a-lifetime this sacred peak. For guests of Bulgaria also is recommended to see the amazing architecture of Shipka if they are nearby.

Shipka peak is located 22 km away from the town of Gabrovo and is easily accessible by car or bus. It is a unique historical and architectural reserve that combines the beautiful Balkan mountain scenery and historical monuments related to the important events of Russian Turkish war 1877 – 1878 and the liberation of Bulgaria from the Turkish slavery. If you arrive by car, continue up to the parking lot at the foot of the monument to save your climb on thousands of stairs. The outcome of the Shipka -Sheinovo battle was the breaking point and crucial for the prevention of Turkish influx from South to North. 7500 Russian and Bulgarian soldiers fought and defeated 37000 Turkish troops back in August 1877 and continued to defend the Shipka pass in the cold through the winter. The monument was built and opened back in 1934 with donations from the entire Bulgarian nation. Above the central entrance you will see a bronze lion - a symbol of the Bulgarian statehood. The other three sides have the names of Shipka, Sheinovo and Stara Zagora - the battlefields reminiscent of the feats of Bulgarian volunteers. I would highly recommend entering and visiting the interior of the monument for which you have to pay a 3 Lv per person or family fee of 6 Lv only. On the ground floor, beneath a marble sarcophagus placed on four lying lions, the bones of Shipka's defeated heroes are kept. In front of the sarcophagus, the stone figures of a Russian warrior and a Bulgarian soldier have ceased to be an eternal guard. The exposition, located on the other seven floors of the monument, reveals the heroism of Russians and Bulgarians during the five-month defensive passage and the panorama view from the top terrace is stunning.

This was amazing! Unfortunately it was foggy when we went, but it was still worth it. It is huge!! I love these abandoned soviet buildings. Great views from up there as well

You can drive to the base of the monument but then it’s 220+ steps to the monument itself then about 120 to the top of the world, and the views are fantastic

Shipka monument is an important spot for Bulgarians. One of the major battles happened there and brought the freedom for the country.
When you go to Shipka try to choose a good weather, put confortable shoes as there are a lot of stairs and take your time to read the history of the artefacts exhibited there.

I actually ran up the enormous flight of steps from the cafe rest stop area at the bottom while the rest of our group relaxed in the sun with icecreams. The run up was a good workout, but you can actually drive up to the top if you prefer, personally I think something like this on a hill is much more rewarding if you have to exert yourself a bit to reach it. The views of the countryside are great and the tower is very photogenic with its huge lions out front. You buy your ticket from a small hut to the right hand side (assuming you are standing with the long steps behind you). The tower has many floors and on each there are numerous military related museum pieces, including many paintings, most of which relate to the wars with and against the Russians and Ottomans. As with rather a few Bulgarian sites it is a little lacking in effort. The pieces are just put out and there is almost no multilingual explanations. There is very little in the way of macro level information, you have to put a decent amount of effort in to understand what is going on, which is a shame as I am sure the museum pieces are very insightful, but I like I suspect most, will just pass them all by.

Our party contained 8 people including three couples. We drove up to the car park and my son stayed to accompany our disabled daughter as the climb was impossible for her. The idea of a ski lift occurred to us at this point! Nevertheless, the rest us climbed the steps to the foot of the monument and we found it to be very impressive and a worthy tribute to the soldiers who fought at the pass in 1877. Several of the party went inside too and climbed to the top. The views from it are stunning.
