We traveled this road 3 times in our 10 day trip. It was fast and efficient. As of Nov 2016 they are doing construction to improve the road at the Hilo end. We were never delayed long, the road is compacted gravel for couple miles, well marked and easy to drive. We didn't have any hesitations about using the road.

If you're on the Big Island of Hawaii, this is a great road trip on the newest Hwy. Named after the great Senator Daniel Inouye. Be careful of speed limits.

It was a flip of a coin. Some locals said take the Saddle and others said take the high road around the coast. We had a deadline to meet at Blue Hawaiian Helicopters so headed east on the Saddle. Only experienced approximately three miles of construction and a little slow but saved quite a bit of time.

A unique way to see Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea from between the volcanos, the saddle the road is named after. Remember once on the road there are no services or restrooms, except at the National Park office, until you reach Hilo. Make sure the car is gassed up and in fine working order. It is very expensive to have... More

We took this from Waikoloa to Hilo. The road is newly paved, so it is in terrific shape- except for a stretch just before Hilo that was still under construction- that part was super bumpy and very very very slow, but it seems they should be done with that in a few months, meaning the entire road from one side... Kona and Hilo are very different towns and this is an interesting drive between them. Quite a downhill grade coming into Kona. It was under construction near the summit but there wasn't a problem when we went through.

Not recommended for those who get car sick. We look this from the Waikoloa Village area so met some construction close to Hilo. It is a very scenic drive because of the change in land and vegetation. Met a couple one car bridges and the curves and hills also made it interesting. We were in a mustang and had no... More

I must say that Saddle Road is a vast improvement from when I first traveled across it years ago. The road is smooth and it gets you from one side of the island to the other in a reasonable amount of time. However, when we were nearing the end towards Hilo, we were stuck for between 5-10 minutes as they... More
