A small part of this road is still under construction, but the majority is very nice and is the best way to get across the Big Island. There's even a perfectly located rest stop with vending machines and bathrooms which was very nice and very well lit.

This road is much easier in the day time. There still can be dense fog and rain. There is a recreation area about half way that has restrooms. Some interesting landscapes along the way as well as a herd of feral sheep.

Traveling the Big Island requires a fresh perspective on road travel when compared to the mainland. Patience is a virtue and slow down to enjoy the more relaxed pace in Hawaii. This road greatly simplifies getting to Mauna Kea or Hilo from the west side of the island. Enjoy the views and relax as you go from the "dry" side... More

This is a high Country road that crosses the island. It's in great shape and is an easy and fun drive with a lot of changes in altitude and vegetation. We took it to get to the road leading up to the mauna kea summit and so didn't cross the entire way to Hilo.

guess when this was more underdeveloped this would be considered an adventure. now it's a highway from one side of the island to the other (Hilo to Kona). you use it to get to Mauna Kea observatory road, but the side from Hilo is under big time construction so be prepared for ruts, bumps, single lanes and flagmen. take your... This road provides the shortest way to Hilo from the Kona side. Unfortunately, a significant portion of the eastern slope side is currently under extensive reconstruction. Access to the road up to Mauna Kea is not effected. Not really much to see along this road even when not under construction. Much more enjoyable to go north through Waimea or south... More

This used to be a terrible road but is great now. Very little traffic and a real shortcut from one side of the island to the other.

I can see where this will be a great highway once completed, but right now it is under construction and a very bumpy ride in an already slow zone.

This is a very scenic drive. Not at all what you would consider for Hawaii. Interesting to see the change in vegetation that comes with the change of altitude. There is some construction on the Hilo side but the delay was not significant.

When we reading about taking Saddle Road, some of the reviews made it sound like it was not a good road. The road is great until a few miles before Hilo where there is road construction. There the road is very dusty and bumpy, but nothing impossible. Be sure to get gas before you go. There is a park on... More
