We took this route back from Hilo to Kona. It was raining when we left Hilo which left the roads messy! For about 8 mikes or so it was gravel road. Very slow going. Once we were out of the construction zone, which was probably about 25 miles, the road was great. Not t much as far as scenery and... More

An efficient route between east and west sides of the island. We were pleasantly surprised to find it much improved from our last trip in 2012. Construction on the Hilo end of the road will ultimately make this road a perfect highway. I wouldn't recommend driving it at night until the construction is finished; however, it appears they have it... More

It was a nice road to drive in during the day, and stop and walk over to the old lava flows by the road side. People warned us against driving it at night because of possible fogs. We had a good return drive as it was a clear night. The construction on one end caused a five to ten minute... More

Easy way to cross, the island. From Kona you hit some construction as you near Hilo. A few miles of gravel road that adds about 15 minutes to the drive.

This room is under construction. I thought it was quite dangerous to drive this road at night. The only way from the east to the west side of the island however that doesn't take very long. Go in the daytime

Drove across as part of a tour. Definitely plan on going back to get more pictures. Beautiful as you drive between the volcanoes. Must do in the daylight for full impact.

Old Saddle Road (which you can still drive starting south of Waimea) was very curvy, with one lane bridges and other hazards. The new road (Daniel K. Inouye Highway - after the late Senator from Hawaii) is wide and smooth. It is the fastest and safest way to drive from the east (Kona/Waikoloa/Waimea) side of the BI to the west... More

I have to say that once you have been here for a couple days, you want to see more flowers, oceans, and beautiful palm trees! Not on Saddle Road. I felt like I was in the dessert in Palm beach or Nevada. Okay, YES lava is super cool and I loved seeing it and learning all about the different layers... More

If you are searching for a relaxing scenic drive thru mid-Big Island, saddle road is a definite way to go. Picturesque views of the countryside. U will also have the opportunity to see at 8 of many types of vegetation changes.

I have made the drive a few times, going up to the Mauna Kea Visitors Center and driving from Hilo to Kailua. The road is much improved from years ago. Smooth and fast with great views of Mauna Kea. It is worth it to take the drive to visit the other side of the island, whichever side you happen to... More
