- DrValliappanCoimbatore, India10,640 contributionsSmall beach with lots of activity around. Safe and guarded public beach in Kona, HIIt is a small beach with waves to stand and some to surf. It is full of visitors with families and kids. Surrounded by shopping areas, lodging and restaurants. One of the top 10 beaches in Hawaii that has a life guard attached for safety.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 October 2023
- Markus W11 contributionsTop location, service and foodThis place is right next to a wonderful beach. You can dine with a view of people swimming during sunset, with the sound of the ocean in the background. The service was amazing, despite us getting in without a reservation at the bar. The food is fantastic, especially the Brussels sprouts as an appetizer.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 5 October 2023
- toriLos Angeles, California50 contributionsMagical!Small beach, but amazing waves!! If you want to boogie board, this is where locals and tourists go! The waves are huge, and fun to even float in. I wouldn’t recommend for kids or people who aren’t comfortable with big waves. Fun to even watch people ride the waves and watch the sunset.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 November 2023

Unit 314 is the corner unit right next to the park. The noise from the park and lack of privacy makes the unit not as desirable as the other third and second floor units. Over the years I have stayed in several units E.G. #311 and I suggest going for one of the remodeled units in the center of the building. The views are always great. The beach can get overwhelmed with tourists, so you also might want to consider further down Alii Drive, closer to the stores.

This beach is super dangerous for young kids (apparently the third most dangerous in the state). It’s all giant mossy rocks, no real sandy areas or gentle shore break, so people were riding huge breaks into boulders. Definitely not for the under 12 crowd. We ended up leaving after 10 minutes because my 8 year old couldn’t safely play. This was low tide in July, I can’t imagine other times.

Went here twice on our vacation. It’s right in the middle of town with lots of people. It’s a small beach with white sand and an undertow. Good for swimming but not great for snorkeling. The second time we went with teenage relatives and they liked it. No bathrooms, had limited parking lot across the street otherwise park along road wherever you can. There was a shave ice food truck at parking lot and random dude selling fresh coconuts. Pretty sunset, quite crowded, as it is right on the main drag of Kailua-Kona. A bit too small and crowded for our taste. We drove 30 min south and found hidden gems much more to our liking.

Perfect beach to enjoy the ocean if you are on vacation or a local. The lifeguards in the area try to keep everyone safe. I got the impression this is a local hotspot for surfing and bodyboarding. The waves on calm days are perfect. If there is a strong current with waves over 15 to 20 feet, I would advise most people not to go into the water. I went out myself with fins and I was barely able to swim out of the current.

My husband and I came to Magic Sands for the day to do a little snorkeling and swimming. The beach is small and looks like it can get pretty crowded, but it wasn't too bad when we were there. The waves are manageable and the water is clear. There are some tide pools where you can look for pretty little critters. The water itself was great for snorkeling and you only have to go a few feet out to start seeing all of the fish! We saw at least 10 varieties of reef fish and a moray eel!

This is NOT a beach for small kids but teens and experiences swimmers. This is the 3rd most dangerous beach due to how rough the waves are. However, the sand is white with no rocks and if you have a boogie board then it is an absolute must. If you have snorkel gear you can also enjoy the different fish that are swimming on the sides of the beach. By far my favorite beach!!

Rough shore break, crowded water on a Sunday. Did not venture in, repeated warnings from the guard about not boogey boarding in front of the tower due to unexplored rocks. Parking available across the street.with locals hanging out and smoking weed in the lot which gave us doubts. When we returned to the car all was good.

My family and I were on vacation in the Waikoloa Beach Resort area in July and we went to Magic Sands Beach. It was a little bit of a drive for us. We had to park on the side of the road and walk to the beach. The sand was soft and the water was clear and warm. The beach was relatively small but was not overly crowded the day we were there. The waves were pretty strong and it was great for boogie boarding. Our girls (6 & 8) enjoyed playing in the water but our 6 year old wanted to play closer to the beach after one of the waves took her out. So I recommend that you keep an eye on little ones. We did enjoy ourselves but we prefer bigger beaches.

We are going to Kona over Christmas 2020. When does the sand "magically" leave the beach? Do you think it will be there at Christmas? Thanks!
Written 12 March 2019
We were there from December 14-24, 2018 and there was plenty of sand at that time and the weather was fantastic. It does depend on the tides when the sand leaves the beach but if there isn’t any when you go, there are many other beaches with great sand, especially if you drive a short distance.

How do you get to the actual beach off Ali’i Drive? Every map I bring up shows the location in a parking lot on the other side of the road which makes no sense. Where is it in relation to the Kona Reef Resort, for example?
Written 6 January 2019
The beach is small and easy to miss. Look for the magic sands hotel, (being renovated) on the right hand side, as you go south.
Then park in the parking lot on the left hand side of the street. The actual beach is protected by a guard rail the entire length of the beach. It's hard to find a spot along the side of the road, so just go for the large gravel parking lot across the street.
Unless you are a strong swimmer and in great physical shape, this may not be the time of year to go. Winter swells can produce an undertow that will pull you right out to sea.
